@Biftu  I use an X to shorthand.I hope you'll give me a pass because I'm Jewish and we don't consider Jesus the same way as Christians do.

@Pearlee But then there is being respectful of others' beliefs.

@Sooner  And given the explanation of the X in this thread your comment doesn't even pertain to me.

@Pearlee It doesn't pertain to you only.

I looked at it and I thought it looked very nice!

Granted, black and red are two of my favorite colors so that didn't hurt.   Smiley Happy

There is nothing disrespectful about "Xmas".

@Bridgegal It is to some people.  We are all different and think differently.  And respect is being open minded enough to admit others see things differently and it's ok.

this article acknowledges your opinion but explains why you are not understanding the legitimacy of the abbreviation and there is no undermining of the connection if Christ to Christmas. You can be edified or just continue to sniff in resentment.

Yes it is my opinion due to my background.  You are wrong in stating that I am not understanding and there is no reason for your comment on me becoming edified.  "Sniff in resentment."  Hardly.  Merry Christmas.

I love hearing a genuine happy "Merry Christmas!" from people. That's the kind I grew up with and am used to.

Can't stand the new huffy self important version with a pointed look meant to communicate something very unmerry and very unpleasant and exlusionary. It's all in the intent and the delivery of the Merry Christmas or Xmas or whatever.

@Biftu @There's a previous thread about this and someone investigated and found that the history of the X is linked to the religiosity of Christmas. The X literally means Jesus.

Quoted from VOX online:

"This is of a piece with those who fret that saying "happy holidays" is somehow scrubbing the season's religious ties away. But those who make this argument are barking up the wrong tree, because, you see, the X in "Xmas" literally means Jesus (Christ). Allow us to explain.

How can the letter "X" stand for "Christ"?

In Greek, the language of the New Testament, the word Christos (Christ) begins with the letter "X," or chi. Here's what it looks like:

Χριστός

So how did that word get abbreviated?

In the early fourth century, Constantine the Great, Roman Emperor from 306-337, popularized this shorthand for Christ. According to legend, on the eve of his great battle Constantine had a vision that led him to create a military banner emblazoned with the first two letters of Christ on it: chi and rho."

Chi rho

@Johnnyeager   Heh.  Wait until the annual:

Dec. 25 is not the real birthday.

It was celebrated as the birthday of Mithras. Using December 25th was a holdover from a holiday that already existed among the people and was transferred over to stand for the day the Jesus was born.

@gizmogal,  so much said in so few words.  If I weren't so satisfied with my current sig I would adopt it.
