I'm guessing because a very large number of people are already well-informed and know who they are going to vote for, and nothing the other person can say -- especially at this late stage -- will change that.  Of course, those who are on the fence stand to benefit most by watching. Simple?

I totally agree! 

There are only 44 days left until the big day, and I think that most people have already made up their mind on who they are going to vote for.

Those who will be watching will be the undecideds, and those who love to watch a car wreck.
