The root cause of the mistake is clearly the guy from PW....NOT Warren Beatty or Faye Dunaway.  In fact, I wonder if PW will now lose their contract with the Academy.  May not be a big deal to some of us, but it sure is a big deal to the Academy and to PW.

It goes to show you what lousy actors Warren and Faye are that they couldn't use their craft to improvise and find a way to give the guy from PW the heads up.  NO, they chose to allow the incorrect winner to climb onto the stage.

The problem is obviously with the people who keep bringing this up.

Well excuse me for wanting to know what the issue and why the NEWS keeps focusing on it. Some of us DO read other things than this forum, you know.

The right movie, in the end, WAS awarded.

What, exactly, is it that's causing people to be fired, nasty comments from celebrities and all the press? Is it just Hollyweird doing its thing as usual?

Can you tell I don't give a flip about the Oscars? I DO, however, want to know why this story is appearing on all my news feeds, hence the original question.

Because nothing and nobody is as important as the celebrities and their awards.  That they take themselves and what they do as seriously as they do makes no room for any error, especially an error from someone who took his importance in all this (hence all the selfies with the celebrities).... so seriously as to not keep his mind on what his role in all this was....  thereby making a horrendous public mistake.

They are angry because this made the celebrities, the awards show and everything to do with thieir self-congratulatory evening look foolish.....

And on top of it all, ratings were down double digits with a 9 year low....

It's sad, but unless something changes I believe the Oscars is circling the drain....

Are you kidding?

The VP of the accounting firm PWC was so busy tweeting a picture of himself with Emma Stone who had just won, that he handed the wrong envelope to Warren Beaty.

That is disgraceful. He has just one job. Hand the right envelope--which are labeled with the particular award-- to the presenter.

No, I'm not kidding.

Did anyone die? No. Was National Security breached? No. Did hundreds of people lose their homes? No.

We're talking MOVIES. Hollywood. So again, please explain to me WHY event is causing so much drama and hysteria on the part of Hollywood and celebrities because I'd really like to know.

I don't know. You're the one who brought it up, so it seems like you're the one paying attention to it.

Yes, because I don't follow the Oscars and because I keep seeing/hearing about it. Is there a problem with ASKING about it? There are items that are FAR more important and yet this seems to be in the headlines constantly. I'd like to know WHY.

Sheesh.

@SahmIam  No one on these forums can explain it to you. They can give you an opinion, but that is it. And...as we all know, everyone has a different opinion.

Re: Please explain to me WHY the error at the Oscars is such a big deal.

BTW, for those annoyed that I even ASKED this question, you haven't answered it....

What damage did the mix-up cause to anyone? Or is it really just Hollywood being Hollywood? If so, why do people put so much stock in what this group says or does if something like this gets their knickers in a twist?

Kinda sad in a train-wreck way.

Thanks Proudlyfrom NJ. It would appear that way. Too bad Hollywood can't manage it either.

I hadn't thought about it for a while, until I saw another new thread about it.

Touche', chickenbutt. : )

I asked because in the 5 minutes before I posted, I saw headlines regarding this "event" on 7 news feeds and heard about it on 4 radio stations (car to home). I thought MAYBE a bribe or something actually serious had occured regarding it (because movies do cost so much to make and profit/cash is KING).

Apparently not. Will I ask again, Oh, HALE no.

Oh wow, really?   Geez.   I have to plead ignorance in that I don't really check a lot of news feeds but I honestly did figure it was just pretty much people posting about it on boards (another board I frequent is discussing it, but there is only one thread that has gone on for days).

I didn't know the news people were still going on about this.  They figured out the problem.  They acted on it.  The end (as far as I was concerned, anyway).   Smiley Happy

Well I tried to answer it.  The La La Land folks were publicly embarrassed.  The Moonlight folks did not have time to fully accept the award.  There are people who were offended by this.

So much so apparently that Price Waterhouse has been excoriated  - altho interestingly, Beatty - who could have easily prevented the whole fiasco - is seen as some sort of victim.

Re: Please explain to me WHY the error at the Oscars is such a big deal.

It's a big deal because someone entrusted with a huge responsibility didn't have the intregrity to do the right thing which is unconscionable considering the task.
