My takeaway from this is it makes me seriously question the local health inspectors and regulations.

I am so glad the State came out right away for the inspection and found the place at its worst. Places with this many violations need to be reported, and are not worthy of representing a well known chain. Corporate definitely needs to know about this small town restaurant, and they need to send a representative to see, and deal with this first hand. I am sure the local manager will try to do the clean up with his own staff, in order to avoid having to let corporate know of the issues, and his personal failure as a manager. I agree that the employees should not participate in the clean up efforts; which appear to be at a far more intense level than any employee should have to carry responsibility for. This manager is a true slacker, and has no business receiving management level pay to run this type of food establishment. I never want to see anyone lose their jobs, but do hope word gets out in your town of the nastiness associated with this Pizza Hut; this sounds like a true nightmare. I think you did a good thing to report this mima, and wish your granddaughter well in her future endeavors; I am sure she will never forget this experience.

Even general managers at these places make about $35,000 a year - not my idea of a big salary.

The real money makers are the franchise holders and corporate.

Not anymore. At least not where I live.

What do YOU think they make? Do you know any PH managers?

Yes, one of my very best friends just quit as a manager. She was a manager years ago and was sort of like an area manager (don't know what they called them). But anyway they made a lot more money about 15-20 years ago now. She quit to raise her kids and then went back recently and she said it is all different now.

If you remind me, next week I'll ask her what she was making this year. Smile I'm just pretty sure it wasn't $35,000.

The main manager's response was that they can't afford exterminators or to have the place professionally cleaned. The waitresses and cooks will have to do the cleaning. There is no way they will be provided with special hazmat clothes!

I don't know if the owner will step up with the money to do all this or not. I don't know who owns it or where they live.

I called anonymously by the way. I didn't want them to know my GD was involved. I own a business in this small town and I don't want to be known as the trouble maker either. So I wasn't THAT brave.

Thanks for all your reponses.

Is it REALLY worth the pittance of a paycheck your GD will be getting?

I suggest they ALL walk off and refuse to do that job.

One year the manager at Walmart made all of the closing shift clock out...but he had locked the doors and told everyone they had to do end of year inventory "off the clock" and couldn't leave until it was finished.

My son piped up and told the manager his mom had warned him about working at Walmart and what they wanted them to do was illegal. He said they had to open the doors and pay people for the extra hours they were working...or he was calling the police on his cell phone and telling them they were being held against their will. He also said he would call the local TV stations and the paper too.The manager said the GM at the store got an end of year bonus based on keeping costs down and he had exceeded his overtime money. My son then told the manager the GM needed to do the inventory himself then. My son said he was scared...but the other employees backed him up - and the manager backed down and paid everyone who decided to stay.

If the PH employees band together, they have little to lose and a lot to gain. The store couldn't operate without their hard work (and low wages!)

BTW - No, my son wasn't fired...he got a promotion to front end manager.

My point previously. I couldn't work in a place like that and in good conscious serve the client.

I don't know any PH managers, but I do know quite a few Darden Corp. co-managers, right out of the training gate they are making much more than $35,000 and for most of them it's their first grown-up real job.

In NM, all restaurants get unannounced inspections by the city health department and all the results are posted every week in the newspaper.

I think the Pizza Hut chain has really gone to pot. Every one I've been in looks shabby and dirty.

Just curious how many you visit? Do you travel the country and go into lots of PH restaurants? I don't think you have been in my local one, as I posted earlier, it's not shabby or dirty, so your generalizations are kind of off target.

Yep, you are exactly right. I know several Darden Restaurant Managers (Bahama Breeze) and they are shift managers not GM's and they are all making about $60k BEFORE they even get their quarterly bonuses which go by the profitability of each store. These were people who were college graduates in completely other fields of studies who worked there while going to school and decided to stay there once they got their masters in their fields of studies. They get nice benefits and vacation packages too. My one girlfriend who works at Bahama Breeze takes about 4 vacations a year and has only been there a couple of years.

Places like PH, Applebee's and Chili's managers may not make that much but many restaurant managers pull in nice salaries.
