Pit bulls?

Long story short ... My friend lost her dog last night. Several months ago her granddaughter adopted a pit bull puppy. The puppy has grown up with my friend's older collie mix dog. The puppy never showed any aggression before but 3 days ago she attacked the older dog. She was taken to an emergency vet and sewn up and given antibiotic and pain meds but died during the night last night. They think she may have been after a dog bone the older dog had. My friend has 2 cats and there is a baby in the house. I've always been leary of this breed just because of all I've heard about them. This was my first personal experience with a pit and I was beginning to believe they were ok. Now I am very afraid for the cats and especially the baby. Any feedback will be appreciated.
