Re: Pike's Peak Colorado questions

emmysmom - altitude sickness is one of my concerns. We lived in the Bay Area (CA) for most of our lives and traveling to parts of Yosemite NP (10k feet) would make me sick-ish. We never stayed long at the high elevations, but still it was uncomfortable. We now live at 4600 feet so when we visit the Bay Area, then return home, it takes me a few days to acclimate to the higher elevation. I don't get sick...just headachey and have a bloody nose for awhile!

Part of me says I'd prefer to be in my own vehicle if I did get sick - but I'm hoping for the best and will prepare for the worst!

lifeisgood - yes, in my research I've discovered that much of Yellowstone begins to close for the winter toward the end of Sept and into October. We are planning for a big range of temps and weather conditions....just hope it doesn't snow while we're on top (or driving to/from) Pike's Peak! {#emotions_dlg.scared}

And we do leave Yellowstone to head south through Jackson - I understand the mountains are stunning & I can't wait to see them! As a native Arizonan, I grew up being able to see mountains all around, and have never stopped loving that! Arizona has some beauties (we live at the foot of the Huachuca Mountains), but somehow I think I'm going to be bowled over by the mountains on our trip!

Thanks again for the helpful comments and good wishes everyone!

Madzonie, I certainly understand your apprehension about altitude sickness. I am sure if you ask your pharmacist, they have things you could have on hand. My doctor told me if you drive to Colorado, your body will gradually become acclimated. We had flown in..makes sense. Have a wonderful trip..I'm so jealous!{#emotions_dlg.wub}
