Pierced ear issues after 30+ years!

I have had pierced ears for longer than I care to think about and still every now and then I have a hard time getting an earring through the piercing. Isn't that weird? And it's not because I go for a long time without earrings - I wear earrings every single day. And I do occasionally get irritated and puffy earlobes. Wonder if it's allergy related?
