Yes, you literally were on line with two others and could ssk. I think it was rule to get off in emergency.  Naturally it depended on individuals, but I think a request could have been made.

Everybody in our area was on a party line.  Ugh -- it was not good.  You had to wait for the line to be free to make or get a call.  We had to several times, get on the phone and ask to please, please, let us use the phone!  Some people hogged the line and acted like it was their own personal private line.  We had a neighbor boy who stayed on the line constantly with his lovesick girlfriend.  We couldn't wait when private lines became available.  We were all so overjoyed when we could make calls any time we wanted also to know that none of the neighbors could be listening in if they wanted to!
