I would have immediately called the police.”If you see something say something”!! This may have been nothing but then again you never know.Like the saying goes “better safe than sorry”.

Let me review this --
you noticed all this action (or what you thought was action) occurring in someone's trunk, yet you did nothing? absolutely nothing?
now you take the time to write about it all when nothing can be done? but you couldn't take the time to write down the license plate and make a call?
Coulda -- woulda -- shoulda.

I'm only guessing that sometimes children might be 'playing hide and seek' games, one or more children possibly hiding in their parents' trunk, etc. Better to call 911, describe the sounds, and tell them that you want to make sure all is well in the trunk.

This was not a mechanical sound. Maybe I read too many mysteries, but all I could envision was a person back there with a tire iron. The driver acted as if nothing was wrong as we went from stop sign to stop sign. Anyone have a logical explanation I might had missed?
Were you standing behind this car or were you driving behind this car? If you were driving behind the car and heard thumping wow! I'll give you a medal for good hearing.

It was an animal. I felt I had to follow up because of all these human trafficking issues. What I learned is that in a certain culture, they buy live pigs from farmers and slaughter them in a ritualistic way, as their ancestors did. I have to say the experience freaked me out, and I wasn't that thrilled with what is going on, but I can respect that it is a part of their culture.

How interesting @AuntG. Please share how you were able to follow up and determine it was a pig to be used for ritual sacrifice.
When I lived in SoFl the most common sacrificial animals were chickens and goats.

Children and adults have been kidnapped that way.
I would have called 911 right away.
Btw, in CA it's legal to call 911 at the same time you are driving.

If you are talking about Santeria, animal sacrifice is illegal where I live, animal cruelty.

@Noel7 I'll have to look up that term because I had never heard of that word before.

@Marp, I had written down the plate and model so after people encouraged me to say something, I followed up.
