Just this morning, walking the dogs, and a woman blew right through a stop sign and did not pay the slightest bit of attention. She was talking on the phone, not texting. It was a four way stop and horns blasting at her from other cars and she went merrily on her way. Guess she was just SO important the conversation could not wait.

Should be a HUGE fine. Big-time fines. Maybe $1,000 or more, to begin with. The more tickets re: texting, the bigger the fine each time. Money talks. Those who cannot afford the fines can do road-work/community service, picking up trash and papers, etc.

I also would like to see HUGE fines for this - something like the type of fine you get for speeding in a school zone at least.
Like others here, I'm totally NOT against cell phones. But the line should be drawn that when you are operating a 2,000# plus vehicle you should be paying attention to the road around you and what's going on in front of you.
The texting, I'd be willing to bet, is 99.999% frivolous. In other words I seriously doubt these people who drive along texting the whole time are having some kind of emergency that requires them to be texting while they drive.
I like technology but sometimes I don't because once you factor in human idiocy it goes bad.

And it was a big deal to get a very long extension cord, so she could bring that phone down the hall to briefly talk with a friend in private! I remember those days, and it seems that Kelly is 'way younger' that I am; yet her childhood experiences were very similar to mine!
Almost every house had a little cubby hole in the hallway for the one phone. It was a big deal when you got one in the kitchen and the master bedroom.

That's an excellent idea and I hope it comes to pass. Once people start having to fork over big bucks, they'll find another way to communicate.

Also, it would be a good source of income for the police dept., enough that it would make it attractive for them to watch for this and issue citations. Of course, I'm not saying you would ignore the guy going 95mph or a house on fire. But there is lots of time to observe drivers too.
Like you said, Topaz, once they have to pay out a huge amount for a citation maybe THAT would be what it takes for many of these folks to stop this irresponsible behavior. Somehow laws are going to have to hit them where it hurts because this isn't working and they just don't seem to care unless it affects them profoundly.

I made a post last week someone almost hit us when they were talking on their cell and my husband had to swerve and we just missed the curb. And when we got our new car a few years ago someone hit us in a parking lot where we were sitting having ice cream. He was on the cellphone too. We had to get our new car repaired just after getting it.
Im SO fed up with cellphones everywhere its unreal. We went to the movies Sunday and 2 people had to open their phones during the movie. Whats SO important that people have to keep using cellphones everywhere? I just DONT get it and never will!
For the record, I have a prepaid cell I rarely use. I have no interest in being on a phone while Im out and about with my husband/family/friends. I am spending time with them, why should I be on a phone? IE RUDE!
I totally AGREE on the texting and driving..BUT you have no CLUE what other people's lives are about..that they may of been a LEGIT reason they opened that phone.
I need my phone for work all the time. I never know when I will be called out..a patient in crisis..I would rather open my phone and disturb your movie then have somebody off themselves..seriously not everything is about you.. ETC.
I also have a disabled husband that has severe medical issues..so I may just open my phone when I need to..so sorry my life does not match yours..you come across high and mighty and preachy all the time..like because YOU don't like Cell Phones..then they are the evil incarnate..cause you and hubby think so!
I commute daily ..all over a large part of our state and it isn't only texting and cell phone talkers out there. I see people putting on makeup..talking a mile a minute to the person next to them with their hands a going..I see them eating..cars thinking they have Four Wheel Drive so they can plow thru the ice/snow up the middle of the road.
This was about TEXTING and Driving..which I totally agree 250% with ..against! Not only teens but adults too! Then we have the older drivers who shouldn't be out driving..
So yeah I will be a RUDE person and open my phone when I am out ..as I am on call 24/7..and it may save a life!
‎02-10-2015 06:53 PM
I always wonder exactly who these 24/7 people are texting with? Guess lots of folks are out of work now-a-days. Or, maybe they are 'working', but not really.

It blows my mind.
Especially once everyone had a cell phone in their hand to be able to talk to people.
Like here?
Good point, this is THE SAME THING as texting.
