@goldensrbest

I assume people are entering adult society from dysfunctional homes. And then, they are entering a dysfunctional society, too?

It's always gone on.  I think you didn't hear about it as much in the past.  For many reasons probably.

It has always been there.  We just have so much access to information now.  I do think some things have been on an uptick since the Opiod Crisis, but the things we read and hear about today only seem new to us, because we are made aware of it by 24/7 information.

IMO, many take drugs to cope with, or escape emotional pain.  They do not have, nor have been taught healthy life skills to deal with problems, setbacks, etc. that are just part of life, and that we all face.

I believe they are "soul sick". I work in a profession where I see parents choosing drugs over their own children. It is a tragedy for everyone involved. Heartbreaking.

They're trying to escape from their life, emotions, etc.

I don't know if it is more than it ever was, or if we just hear about it more - you know?

I also agree with one poster that there are people with addictive personalities and they are prime targets for this.  My husband is the type of person who would be addictive so he just stays away from everything but the aspirin he takes once a day.   (he's very much 'one extreme or the other')

Anyway, there are just so many reasons people do different things like this but I think the biggest catalyst, at this time, is that we hear more about it.  We hear more about what people are doing outside our circle or even outside our city or state.
