I had bought two of those small tools to break the window . One left inside car but the other can go on a key chain.
The GrandMother panicked.
I don't know why she didn't try with a hammer while waiting for 911 to arrive or get a tire iron from a neighbor . She was lucky that it was in the morning , not afternoon.

@skatting44. You needed to have included the information this news story included that described a latch inside the car that will open the door. Apparently most owners don't know it exists, so the problem is lack of dealer education.

It's very sad when people pass away tragically.
I own a Tesla and love it. As another poster stated there is a back up door release in case electronics fail. As most modern cars have complex electronics it's possible for any car doors or windows to get " stuck" with a malfunction. Car owners should educate themselves on their vehicle no matter the type.
my Tesla is very low maintenance and user friendly. Yes it did take a bit of getting used to but many things do. I love not having to get oil changes etc. saves time and money.
There are also great safety features to help avoid accidents.
stay safe and cool everyone!

To open a front door in the unlikely situation when Model Y has no power, pull up the manual door release located in front of the window switches.

If equipped, you can open a rear door manually in the unlikely situation in which Model Y has no power.

@Kachina624 how is that latch supposed to help the grandmother with the 20 month old toddler, probably strapped into the car seat?
My grandson is 2, he's not strong enough to undo the buckles on his car seat.

@CelticCrafter. Of course if a child is locked inside any car, other measures would have to be taken.

Would a 20-month-old child remember that? I doubt they even know what you are talking about.

My DIL has a Mercedes EV and it did the same thing when she was part of a 10-car pile-up and she almost had a nervous breakdown. She did not (and she is very intelligent) recall how to get out of the car but the instruction was to kick the windshield out from the corner (or something like that, which I do not recall). Police broke the window out. It was July of 2023 in the humid southeast, when outdoor temperatures were around 100.

@Nonametoday. A child could be locked in ANY CAR. What would you do if one was locked in your car? That's not the issue here.

One of the best life saving episodes of TV I ever watched was Mythbusters where they attempted to break out of a submerged car. As clips are on youtube now, I feel like it should be required watching for new drivers, but I digress. They went through options like trying to kick out a window or a dash, but unless the pressure from the water and inside and outside are equalized it won't work. Also they said crawl to the back dash as the front sinks quicker and you will have a few more seconds to breathe. The obvious best solution is carrying a window break device. Bought two immediately on Amazon after that episode, they also have the seatbelt cutter built in too if you need that in an emergency. Even in a controlled environment, they submerged the car repeatedly into a pool, the panic was starting to set in at times for the host because he was holsing his breath during the trials. Apparently he even mentioned a second episode similar to this one where a car is flipped over and submerged, was one of the scariest episodes he ever participated in.
I guess Tesla owners should carry that break glass device in their purse or somewhere else, so it is outside the car as well🤷🏻♀️ Will never own one for many reasons already noted within other posters comments.
