I think it depends on who is saying it and the intended so called "friend" as to whether or not it sounds sincere to my ears.
I think it's endearing when the girls at the costco return desk or checking my receipt as I leave refer to me as "hun" since I'm WAY older than them. Too cute!

@icezeus So agree w/u as I find especially w/him that I don't believe anything he says.

I find it as disingenuous and irritating as calling people honey or neighbor.

In reality, everyone we know is not our friend. We may know someone well and like them, but that does not make them our friend.
A friend has deeper meaning to me. It's someone who is your person. You get each other, share history and will be there for each other in crisis. It's not every acquaintance you may have.
Most people have only a handful of friends, if even, that fit this description in their lives. Oprah is famous for saying that of all the people she's known in her life, she can count her true friends on one hand, with fingers left over. Pretty sure she's not alone.
I feel the same way about the word love. We don't 'love' everyone in our lives. Love is an endearing connection to someone, who has a piece of our heart. Telling everyone you love them diminishes the sentiment of the word. It's a word I've said only to those most precious in my life.
Words matter. When repeatedly used in random social chatter, they begin to lose their meaning.

I agree - it sounds fake and superficial. Almost as bad as Josh and Brent calling everyone "neighbor"

I have a lot to worry about and be concerned about in my life. Someone calling me "fiend," "hon," "sweetheart," or "sugar," falls under the category of nice for my world.

We just got a new meteorologist with one TV station. She's very good but constantly refers to " my friends in this city" or " friends in that city". We all know she just got here from a distant state and knows no one. It's very irritating and sounds phony.

@PA Mom-mom wrote:@on the bay I've watched many episodes of "Vera," from British TV. She's a tough cop, but she calls everyone Luv. The first time I heard it, I thought, What?? But, now it seems like she's just trying to get people to open up to her.
Vera uses "pet" more than "love" as she is from northern England.
