I know a high school teacher in my neighborhood who sprays her students' term papers with Lysol. I would say that she has issues, too.
I don't get it. Germs are all around us and it seems worse to weaken immunity by never encountering germs than to take on a few germs and see how our immune systems are doing.

I don't worry about public pens. The only way they are likely to do me harm is if germs from those pens come in contact with my face and/or mouth.
I wash my hands immediately before handling food or touching food I am about to ingest. I wash my hands after using the bathroom, and I open the door of a public restroom with a paper towel in hand on my way out. I also keep my hands away from my face in general.
All I can do is what makes sense...beyond that, eff it. I have other things to worry about.

Mistri?!? Where have you been woman?

Yes, I have run into that situation many times. It isn't that strange to a health professional. My husband and I both carry our own pens. It is easier for a man to just pull the pen out of his shirt pocket than for a woman to go digging around in her purse for her pen...so I frequently just use the offered pen.
You can't avoid all germs...as someone mentioned, doorknobs, light switches, menus, ketchup bottles, grocery cart handles. I use the wet wipes at the store if they are available for grocery carts. Like most people, I have a tiny bottle of hand sanitizer in my purse to use if we eat out. However, your immune system can get rundown if you are constantly applying antibacterial gel, using antibacterial soap, etc.

Did anyone else ever hear his explanation?
terrier: Ok first off I won't touch a bowl of anything that is set out in public. You have people touching the handle of the spoon who may have just wiped themselves prior.
Then you touch the handle and use your hands to put the candy in your mouth. Or the bowl part of the spoon touches hands. Who may have wiped themselves prior.
Or you have the rude people who wouldn't even use the spoon. Who may have wiped themselves prior.
Yes, this man is Adrian Monk's twin, though. But how rude to be discussing fecal matter like that. What is wrong with people??????

FYI - The bowl is in my home. I wouldn't trust anyone in public either!

I thought you meant where you are selling insurance.
But the same would apply - how do you know that your guests haven't just wiped themselves prior to helping themselves to your jelly beans??
And how would I know if you had just wiped yourself before I ate jelly beans in your house?
(I'm being silly btw)
