Re: Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

Pearl Harbor should always be remembred and honored.  Heroic sacrifices were made by all.  The subdued recognition of the day is another reason to teach history.  Other aspects of the day, e.g. Dorie Miller's heroic actions have been getting greater recognition as has the Port Chicago trial.  Those that have visited the Pearl Harbor memorial are fortunate.  I will always treasure my eighth grade trip to Washington, DC and the visit to Arlington National Cemetary.

Re: Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

My SO was born in Honolulu and was 4 yrs old when the bombs hit. He has very vivid memories of hiding under the bed with his siblings. He told me the little market down the street was leveled. A few days later the neighborhood kids went sifting through what remained and he recalls seeing melted coins. His parents moved the family to the mainland a couple years later. What an experience.

Re: Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

I recall my mother telling us about when the attack happened; it was early on a Sunday morning; my grandmother was listening to a church service and it was interrupted with the news of what had happened....my mother said everything changed that day. She was only 20 years old and engaged to my father....he went into the Navy but did return after several years. They married soon afterwards....she kept a book with a map that traced his every move across the pacific and Guadal Canal. i have it and treasure the notes she wrote.

Sad I have seen very little mention of Pearl Harbor today in the media.
