I just got a news brief from CNN Business.

San Francisco (CNN Business)Payless is the latest retail chain to close up shop in the United States.

The discount shoe store will close all 2,100 of its locations in the United States and Puerto Rico in the coming months, a spokesperson told CNN Business on Friday. Liquidation sales will begin on Sunday and stores will begin closing in March, though most will say open until May.
Payless also plans to shut down its online store. The company could file for bankruptcy for a second time by the end of the month, according to reports.

I'm sorry to read this.  For many years payless shoe stores were a nice option for folks on a budget.  I feel bad for the employees.

There are times when you must speak, not because you are going to change the opposing side, but because if you do not speak, they have changed you.

Wow! Martha Stewart just announced December 2018, Payless was selling her new line of shoes.

The Martha Everyday Collection - 12 styles - ranges in price from $30-35.

I think Payless is primarily located in malls, and that has probably hurt them.  On the other hand, DSW Shoes is primarily at stand-alone locations and, as far as I know, is in better condition.

Re: Payless Shoes Is Closing

Retail is insanely competitive. If you're good at what you do, others will copy it and chip away at your business. The odds of any business surviving longterm are not good. People will copy what you're good at, improve what you're bad at, and put you out of business if they can. Pretty much no business can hold a niche all to themselves. When the market share gets divided up into too many small pieces, companies fail.

Wow never saw that coming...Payless is an icon and I even saw Alegria's being sold at the same prices on the Q. Must admit I have not shopped in a Payless in over 10 years.

Re: Payless Shoes Is Closing

It's because they were in malls mostly.  I remember seeing in two different malls....Payless down in a corner of the lower level.  Hidden away in the "basement"   It disappeared two years ago from one mall.  Last summer in the other one.  They also never seemed to advertised for some reason.

Re: Payless Shoes Is Closing

Payless was a godsend for me as a single working mother-for my shoes.

I tried when possible to buy better quality shoes for DD as she was growing up.

Sorry to hear about their closing.
