we have a very successful large business based here in my state..similar to a discount store that purchases products in lots.....they have 139 stores locally..they are giving  their employees a raise...but they are asking customers to chip in with a 2% surcharge added to their purchase when checking out at the register to help with this raise......it's not mandatory...but i think the customer shouldn't be put on the spot when checking out....i appreciate these employees...but i think the business owner is in better financial shape than their customers....what are your thoughts....am i just being corona cranky...

I betcha this employer will be taking a 100% deduction on his payroll as a business expense.  No, the customer should not subsidize his employees.

They did this in Texas but I think it was to pay for their employees health care?

If he wants to give them a raise he should pay for it. It's his business. I don't think he should be asking his customers to pay for it even though it's only 2%.

DH says he's tired of everyone wanting their nickle.

You shouldn't be giving people raises if you can't afford it. I would not be contributing to the cause.

I think I'd be wondering how much the CEO/President makes, and what the cut off is for which employees are getting the 2%.  Is the 2% also going to the CEO/President?

@Spacrazy  Essential stores are open. We are allowed to go. We are also allowed to get out of the house and walk, ride a bike for exercise dog walking and fresh air. Just keep your distance and no crowds.

Many years ago a local restaurant  owner added an automatic gratuity  of 15% to your bill.  I gathered this was  to keep his employee salaries lower. So even if the service was poor or mediocre the customer had no say.  The idea did not last long and went back to the usual.I like Europe where tipping is kind of discouraged , but if you have excellent service some people still would tip but not expected.

i know the store and i feel bad for the cashiers putting them on the spot like that. There are over 100  stores in this chain. They are more fortunate than most retailers they can stay open because they sell some food but only canned and packages goods and snacks. and pet food.

They have a lot of nerve asking for 2% subsidies.
