I don't know about the other thread so this is strictly off the cuff. I do think "patriotism" can be associated with many things. Each person knows what's inside them. I do know that when I see the red, white, and blue, I like it. I don't always wear it on the 4th and don't feel guilty about that because I know how patriotic both DH and I are.
On the other side of that coin.....DH is a disabled vet. I can tell you....he really appreciates it when he sees the flags out on July 4th or someone wearing the colors. In the same manner....he appreciates those who thank him for his service no matter what they are wearing that day. This particular year I bought a Quacker Factory set of two tee shirts. One was royal blue with an American Flag. He reeaally liked it so I will probably do it every 4th from now on if I can. Because I didn't read the other thread, I can't understand why it's even an issue. Patriotism can be shown in so many ways and yes, wearing it on your sleeve for all to see it good..... so is a simple comment of appreciation. Just wanted to give one "vets" reaction this year.

Wearing of the colors is a fun activity to showcase your pride ... just like St. Pat's day, Christmas or orange and black at Halloween.
Yeah, totally! I like a fun aspect to something like that, and I didn't see the thread in question here, but if the implication was that anybody who didn't play along was noe patriotic, that's just kind of messed up.
Hey, I will do colors for fun too except the kind of funny thing is that I don't care for green so St Patrick's Day used to be kind of painful for me.
I never had any green clothes! ha!
It was the thread "Jill, No Red White and Blue" and here is the delightful post that actually claims people who don't where the colors are unpatriotic.

Well you wear what you want and I will wear what I want. That is what makes our country great. We are not required to wear certain colors to prove we love our country regardless of the day.

I write a pretty hefty check to the US Treasury every quarter...
shoving those checks in the mailbox without fanfare or waving Old Glory.
My taxes pay for a lot of freedom I love...with four checks each year w/ a bonus check 'celebrating' April 15th.
So, yeah.....I feel I'm DAM patriotic.
Love every minute of it.
Wouldn't trade it for the world.

I'm sorry you disagree with my post. All I was saying is that on July 4th I feel one should display their patriotism by wearing colors that represent our country- nothing more - nothing less. Lighten up!!!!
********** After reading your quote that someone posted here, I have to say, I can see why the words you spoke evoked the reaction you received.
Most of us here are extremely patriotic in our own way. To have someone insinuate that we are not...... is like a "slap in the face". Even my DH, who almost died from his war wounds and faces other problems due to Agent Orange, did not wear the colors. No one I know is more patriotic than he is. I think it would be wise to admit that it was a poor choice of words.....or maybe you were a little over zealous. People can understand that.

On the contrary, it was more. You stated if people did not wear those colors they were unpatriotic. You need to lighten up. You have never made a post that wasn't mean and nasty.

@chickenbutt wrote:It feels to me like something that goes hand in hand with this kind of perverted view of patriotism that began right after the beginning of this century.
It was this new brand of patriotism defined by 'either you're with us or you're a terrorist'. Of course, the 'us' to which it referred with was the 'we're the only good country and we need to blow everybody else to smithereens' kind of sentiment.
Remember the whole flag pin thing? Yikes! If one didn't wear a flag pin they were unpatriotic. If they spoke against the horrors that were going on they were unpatriotic and a part of terrorism.
Sadly, that whole 'lowest common denominator' type thinking is still alive. But I think that a lot of us aren't like that. I was patriotic WAY before patriotic was cool, so I get it. I think a lot of us here also 'get' it.

Oh dear lord. Now we have the Patriotism Police.
I too "wonder" about what goes on inside some people's heads.

I'm with you. That is the silliest thing I've heard in a long time.
In all my years and all the military people I have been around, I have NEVER seen groups of people hanging out or going about their business on July 4th, all wearing red, white and blue.
