And I hate to burst the millions of dollars that the hospitals are making. They absolutely don't. Most hospitals run deficits and if someone is medically cleared to leave, there is not much the staff can do as someone else pointed out. If you are not in need of medical attention, you will be asked to leave.
We really need some sort of public program or charity to work this out for those people who don't have family around them and need someone to shelter or transport them to a safe place.
There is an EXCELLENT article regarding children being stuck in hospitals for months because of the extreme shortage of home care nurses. Bottom line, you make more flipping burgers at McDonalds then taking care of a child with multiple tubes, needles and other medical concerns. How disgusting is THAT?! So families either have to quit their job or go into debt and then declare bankruptcy especially as so many insurance plans don't cover home care or pay $5 an hour for it.
The system is a mess, folks. An absolute mess. : (

Absolutely no excuse! Where was the discharge plan? Clearly this poor soul is mentally ill and needed support and transfer to a shelter or transitional living. This is the worst.....I can't believe this is still happening. Makes me cry. We are really no better than what happened in the 70's. I am disgusted.

@MickD They don't care about the people with mental problems. The HIPPA laws keep you from being able to help someone with these type problems. Take it from me I have a brother with a mental illness that was homeless for a while & we went thru all the loops trying to get help for him. I think they make it hard for you to get them help so your State does not have to pay out money to help these people. That's my opinion & it's a sad thing. We finally found him the help he deserved as does everyone else. He's doing a lot better now with the medication he needed.

Preach @SahmIam!!
I am going from hospitality to pharmacy and my salary will be gone by two thirds when I do it.
Yep. I get paid an obnoxious amount of money to cater to rich people but only minimum wage to dispense drugs for which I need to be licensed, drug tested, background checked, and insured.
Now, which job would you think they would actually want and need quality people in and should pay good money to make sure they do?
Yep, your head can explode now too.

To anyone who cares:
This is more than class or race; this simply has to do with what insurance coverage you have (or don't have). The vast majority of those that I know (many, personally, including my own father) were over 65. What insurance do most people in the US have over the age of 65, regardless of race or class? Unless you have LOTS of money to burn (and that's usually the 1% or celebrities who usually don't bother with health insurance due to their wealth), everyone is in the same boat. I know many who are poor but have medicaid and even more who are not poor but don't have insurance; they ALL get the boot if they don't have the funds, trust me.
People need to realize that in the end, it comes down to money. That and being able to nagivate a very corrupt and back-ass-backwards system. I know, I've been doing it for years. I was there when they attempted to toss my father out on a Friday at 4:45 pm because Medicare didn't cover the weekend. However, we were free to bring him BACK IN ON MONDAY MORNING VIA THE ER and he could stay the week. I gave the person my CC and told them to "charge it". Boy, did HIS care change after that!!!!
Pathetic and yet, the norm for the poor, disabled and the elderly. Unless you've been through the system in a way NOT invovling private insurance, I don't think you're aware of how bad it truly is. I worked it, I've been on the receiving end of it, I've advocated for those who are dealing with it....it's hell. And nobody who has the power to make the changes does anything because...well, you tell me.

I don’t think this had anything to do with insurance or lack of insurance. Someone did not follow proper procedure.
it is against the law to put anyone outside almost naked in the wintertime when it is freezing. If you or I did this, we would be arrested for abuse. The hospital was abusive and they will be punished in some way.
the proper procedure would be to at least find the clothing the patient was wearing when admitted and return them o her. A social worker would be called in to access the situation and find a temporary place for her to stay and provide the basics such as food, clothing and medications until there was a better place for her.
sometimes the “Y” will take women for a about a month until a place is found.
if she refuses treatment, then they must let her go, but not without clothing and shoes. They at least have to try to help her.
This is so wrong on so many levels.

wrong, utterly & completely wrong - just wrong.

I saw the report and video last night. It was especially shocking that she was left outside in 30 degree weather in nothing but a hospital gown.
Thank God for the man who spoke to her, asked if she needed help, stayed with her and called 911.

@SahmIam wrote:I know this hospital quite well; was there last week. ALL hospitals do this. ALL. The fact that a person with a cell phone has the ability to download a video MAY change things but don't count on it.
Usually it's Friday night when this happens because certain insurance won't pay for the patient to stay in over the weekend. You begin to hear the cries and arguments around 4pm as patients and families are informed they must leave. It's heartbreaking and it happens all over the nation in all hospitals.
Security does what they're told or they will lose their jobs and be blackballed from working at any other hospital. I know someone who deals with this on a daily basis. The decision comes NOT from the medical staff but from the "bean counters" as my Daddy used to say.
You'd be shocked if you knew all the blip the administrative staff does to save money but boy, nothing better happen to THEIR pay and perks.
BLEH.
They don’t all do that. Mine has one person come in at admission and read patients their rights, another come in and discuss going home when the time is near and making sure you have a place to go and someone with you. If not, one of the several social workers on duty is brought in.
This city let it be known years ago patient dumping would be punished.
