This is incorrect @crazered.

The Passport Card can only be used "internationally" for Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the United States.  You can only use the Card if you are travelling by car, boat.  You can not fly into Canada, say from, NJ with the card.  You need the passport booklet.

Just to be clear anytime you leave the US you are travelling "internationally" even if it's just to Canada.

@itiswhatitis

@i do believe that @crazered is correct  as to what she is specifically talking about. the passport card can be used for travel within the usa. they will be requiring a valid STAR id/REAL id or a passport booklet/card for travel within the usa next year, i believe.

That's not what I'm talking about.  I'm responding to the notion that all you need is the card to fly into Canada.  You can't do that @sunshine45

yes, i know @itiswhatitis.

@crazeredstated that in her post. it is a good card to have if your state is not REALid compliant when you are traveling in the usa.

My State is not "Real ID compliant" and I travel within the US with my driver's license.  I have no problems, @sunshine45.  Until this is a mandate for all States (which is how it would be done) then there's no need to worry about "Real ID."

my state is REAL ID compliant, but you can read that it will be required quite soon @itiswhatitis for domestic travel. everyone has about half of a year left.....this has been noted for a while now. this is from the government website. @crazered stated that HER state was not real ID compliant at this time.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) states that REAL ID-compliant identification, such as a driver's license from a REAL ID-compliant state or a passport, will not be required to fly domestically until January 22, 2018.

@sunshine45 First, realize that all it is (required by the Federal Government) that States set standards for issuing and re-issuing DRIVER'S LICENSES.  No separate ID's are required.  Did you even read the info from the federal governmet website I offered?  No separate card.  Nada, zilch.  No.  They US government wants our State IDS' to be more secure (which means a newer technology).  States have to implement this.  As I said, no new card.

Re: Passport Booklet and a Passport Card?

yes @itiswhatitis i understand perfectly.

@crazeredspecifically stated that HER state is not compliant at this time. for her to travel, she will need to get a passport OR have a passport card. she will not be able to use her state ID for air travel if her state doesnt comply with government guidelines. by that time in january 2018. i do believe that there are a number of states that still are not compliant.

Re: Passport Booklet and a Passport Card?

  • Starting October 1, 2020, every air traveler will need a REAL ID-compliant license, or another acceptable form of identification, for domestic air travel.

In this case your passport works as well..........

yes, it does.....although a passport card is much cheaper if you dont plan on traveling outside of the country via air. i personally got both.....the passport and the card......and ihave a REAL ID compliant drivers license also. as i said, these days especially, it never hurts to have MULTIPLE forms of ID.

I'm not spending extra money unecessarily.  I don't do that.  I have a passport.  If my State is or isn't compliant I have a passport to back me up.  One and done......

Re: Passport Booklet and a Passport Card?

@itiswhatitis

.....and i purchased both......it is a matter of personal choice of course.

if someone isnt planning on traveling outside the USA, then a passport card makes a good additional piece of ID.......without having to spend the money on a passport booklet.

i am going to canada in august.....i will be taking my passport card rather than my passport booklet.

That much is true about personal choice.  There other "acceptable forms of ID" that may be doable.  One would need to see what the TSA defines as "other."  It's more than licenses and/or passport book/card.  The list is on the website.

Some folks should check there first because, who knows?  Maybe they are already in possession of another 'valid form of identification."  @sunshine45

I am.  Now that you mention Canada, I'm supposed to be going as well.  This will all depend on what my son does.  It's his idea.  My second trip for the year if I do.  Don't mind travelling more in the warm months.  Not so much travel in Winter though @sunshine45.  Nope......
