They have been on high alert in France since Charlie Hebdo and possibly the law requiring the removal of facial veils.  They state one of the men holding the hostages shouted out "this is for Syria".  They are also reporting a 4th attack in a shopping mall but it is not confirmed; the report came from Europe 1

UPDATE: A police official has said that around 100 hostages are being held at Bataclan concert hall, near the former headquarters of Charlie Hebdo magazine, and 35 are dead in the attacks according to the AP.

CBS TV in NYC is saying 35 dead and CNN online is saying 60.

What will happen to the hostages?  I don't know how it could turn out good.  These terrorists aren't human.

I just said to my husband, do you realize what it would be like if this happened on our soil?  Our lives would be so upside down right now.  It's a big country, and all of it wouldn't be in peril.  But I would want to be with all my loved ones, especially the little ones and just hug and kiss them.  Nonstop!
