I came in late on that discussion, and it didn't seem too contentious -- I was just pushing the button to post, and it disappeared. It thought it seemed to be a good discussion-do you know what happened-or can you say? (Not sure about doing this "paging" thing!)

are you talking about the equal pay thread? I didn't think it was bad at all. I think some people are upset at the whole equal pay for women in general (they don't believe it exists) and that is why it is gone...not that it is gone because people were uncivil - it wasn't last I posted there.

Yes, I got in on it late but read the whole thing to see what was said. I was just posting to congratulate any "older" women like me who helped in the fight to raise the glass ceiling, and when I pushed the button, it disappeared. Someone may have posted while I was writing mine, but I thought overall it was fine. Wonder why??

I don't know - I mean, if people politely disagreeing on a very civil thread is grounds for poofdom, good grief.
And thank you, kittymomNC for your help to raise the glass ceiling. One area of careers where that has been really apparent (at least to me) is the tech field....

I was enjoying reading other ideas and viewpoints...geez!

I hope my post didn't get it deleted! I think it was being deleted when I hit the submit button. I'm going to re-post what I said -- if this one disappears, I guess I must have said something wrong!

I'm getting in late on this discussion, but I just wanted to say that the gender pay gap has a lot to do with the fact that most senior positions in a company are usually held by men, and women for decades have been looked at differently when it comes to the workplace.
I started in Human Resources at a company as an Executive Assistant to the VP--and I knew he always considered me his "secretary". As I was promoted, I no longer reported directly to him. One promotion involved having my job title as "Supervisor", but he had a real problem with that. In the job description, everywhere it said "supervises", he wanted it to say "oversees"! I finally got so frustrated that (with my manager's permission) I took him the dictionary, which listed "supervises" and "oversees" as synonyms for one another! With a rather red face, he gave up! He just had such a hard time not thinking of me as a "secretary" (not that there is anything wrong with being one). Eventually, as I moved into management, I realized a lot more about the "glass ceiling" and why it was there---and in those days, it was a lot lower than it is now.
So for you ladies who are older, like me, congratulations for whatever your part was in making that glass ceiling lift a little higher and a little higher over the years. Maybe one day there won't be one, as more women continue to fight --like Lily Ledbetter and so many others. Be proud that you helped pave the way for the younger women of today to be treated as true equals in the workplace!

Kittymom, thanks for the shout out. No clue what happened to the thread about equal pay.....it was very respectful with lots of posters sharing their career experiences. It's a shame talking about women being paid the same as men for doing the same job could be controversial.
After hearing Lily Ledbetter speak today, I'm impressed with her persistence in standing up for herself and paving the way for other women.

Yes, it's been a busy.news month already, with some very positive progress on important fronts. June will also be an interesting month.
