Cymru Am Byth (Wales forever) Smile

My heritage is English, Irish and Scottish. I am proudly born in the U.S. and an American first, but I have always had a great interest in all things U.K. I find it fascinating. This thread has been really interesting IMO.

Me, too Smile

My paternal grandparents were born here but both spoke Welsh and carried on the traditions. Years ago, the English used to punish school students for speaking Welsh, and they took down signs in Welsh and made them illegal. Hence the motto that lives on, Wales Forever {#emotions_dlg.wub}

My mother was mostly Irish ancestry, and DH's mother was Irish & Scottish. My daughter has a fine mix of Celtic DNA, including some Cornish.

I love your posts, Becki!

English, Scots-Irish and Welsh here. And to my shock once I started on Ancestry.com, both sides have been here since the 1600s. I qualify for membership in the Mayflower Society. Knew none of this until fairly recently. ETA I'm a lifelong history buff, and not just UK history.

Congratulations! {#emotions_dlg.biggrin} I go way back on my mother's side, to the 1600s, but I don't know if it's as far back as the Mayflower. I do know her ancestors fought for the Revolution, she had the diary which included DAR membership. Both sides of mine fought for the North during the Civil War. I have a photo of one who returned but later died of his war wounds, and the belt buckle from the other (which gives who he fought with).

I also love doing ancestral history!

My favorite thing I discovered is that I'm related to Edgar Allan Poe :-)

On one side of my family they were from Tennessee, so I doubt Union there ;-)

I think it's presumptuous for Americans to insist the monarchy is irrelevant and ignore the facts by calling it mere propaganda, when numbers tell a different story.

I am no fan of Charles, but I doubt he's an idiot. His horticulture studies and what he's done with them show that not to be true.

What I do like is the history of the UK. My ancestors came out of Ireland and Wales, both of which have had serious problems with the English over the centuries, but it amazes me that such a small area has had so much impact on the world, including language which is now ours, also.

You are entitled to your opinion on this. {#emotions_dlg.unsure}

I seriously doubt that anyone goes to London thinking they will actually meet members of the royal family ..... no one is that delusional. Personally, I went to see the architecture, not the queen.

Of course, there are many who insist that the royals are the reason anyone would visit England, but since there's never been any tourist dollars comparison to NOT having a royal family, it's mere conjecture.

You've obviously never read anything about the argument for abolishing the royals .... many view them as dysfunctional billionaire ribbon cutters and nothing else .... but there are good points made for doing so. If you've never done so, I don't see how you can debate the point with any authority ..... just an opinion. {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown}

Oh. please. I've studied about the UK, I've been there, traveled through parts of it.

Of course I know some would like to abolish the monarchy, but the majority want to keep them. It's their business, not mine.

You obviously have a real hate-on going for the royals, as your opening post and follow-up comments have shown. That's your opinion, fine, but some of us also like the facts thrown in.

Uh ... there ARE facts thrown in ... if you would have taken the time to read the other side of the argument.

I already have read the arguments.

What I don't understand is why you want to trash your own line. I don't agree with you, and from what MANY others here have said, they don't agree with you, either.

Let it go, people have been having a nice time chatting, but here you are, back with demands and eyerolls.

Relax, it's a nice weekend.

First, I question the authenticity of the article. Is "The Daily Beast" a "rag" newspaper or similar to several other "rag" magazines we have. I don't know; however, I can't imagine that Prince Charles is not part of George's life.

Of course it isn't true. As with many couples, they spend more time with the wife's family.

I'm not trashing my own line .... but I admit I did overreact a tad when I felt you were trying to "hijack the thread" by talking about your ancestry ..... if you want to talk about that, by all means start your own thread.

Again, sorry .... {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}
