My driver's license expired in June and since I hadn't driven a car since 1993, I exchanged it for a non-driver ID.  Driver's license cost $80, ID cost $6.50.

I was in and out of the DMV in about 15 minutes with a temporary ID and a week later the new ID arrived.  My passport expires next year.

There are a lot of unknown answers right now because each State has their own rules.  For example, when your passport expires can you use a non real id driver's license to renew?  Using an expired passport only is not enough to prove identity. Will you be able to use an expired passport to renew your non real id driver's license.

Will you be able to use an expired passport to gain access to federal buildings.  My state does require a real i.d. for court buildings and post offices although that is subject to change.

Yes, I have my real i.d. and my hospital stamped birth certificate was not acceptable and had to send away for an approved copy from Vital Statistics in the state I was born.  Plus needed my name on two utility bills to prove residency.

I hope that people realize that they will need a Real I.D. to get in to government buildings, such as courthouses, and not just to travel domestically.

So no jury duty if you don't update your ID?

@Porcelain @Anonymous032819

My thoughts exactly. Last time I received a notice I threw it in the trash & went to Fl. LOL!!!

@Nightowlz   Did you hear of the story of the young man (in Fl., BTW) who was jailed for 10 days because he didn't show up for jury duty?

Re: POLL: Real ID⭐️

[ Edited ]

Nope. We're using our passports. We keep getting more and more threatening letters from the DMV (Maryland) and they can kiss our bips. The background check is far more odious for a passport so, yeah.

As for jury duty, I've sat on a jury every 5 years since I turned 21; at least, I did whenever I was in the country. Just once I wish I could sit on a stupid robber case instead of a horrific child murder/rape/murder for hire/domestic violence murder/etc case. I've done enough of those to last a lifetime. If this keeps me from performing another "civic duty", fine by me. Sorrynotsorry.

@ann1989  My passport has not expired in fifty years. I renew it when it is due, not when it expires so I always have a valid one. Don’t need a DL to renew a passport.

Yes, even though I don't use my driver's license for my ID when I travel. I use either my passport card (domestic) or passport. Why? No address on the passport/passport card. No one who's checking my ID needs to know where I live.

@ann1989 You get a new one.  In our family, a currant passport is something you ALWAYS have available.
