@NicksmomESQ this fee was to upgrade only, not for a renewal. I suspect it covers the cost of reissuing a valid license.

NY has Enhanced Drivers' Licenses, which are not only good for domestic air travel, but can also be used to cross into Canada and Mexico by land, and to enter any federal building or military base. It can also be used to re-enter the USA from certain Carribbean Islands.(You still need a passport to enter those islands). It has a chip that contains the same info that is on your passport and the necessary documentation to get one are the same as for a passport. They cost an additional $30 on top of the regular license fee. They have a flag in the lower right-hand corner. There are only a few states that offer these, but they are handy for those of us who live on the border and frequently travel back and forth to Canada.  I

Yes, and I also have a passport as well. It was time for me to renew my Drivers License anyway, it does not cost anything extra so why not.

Ever since the Homeland Security went into effect we need to show up at DMV with 6 points of ID every time we need to renew our license. At some point you do get a one time pass and can renew by mail then next time you're right back to showing up with all the paperwork.

You are not alone we do the same here in Texas too, what a pain....Thankfully I have the "star" ID....

@Spurt   ???  Is this new?  I renew online and then the next renewal is in person and the back to online next time and so forth.

I've never had to bring 6 ID's.  Is that just for the Real ID* now??

They are slow rolling it here in TN. They only started issuing them here in July this year. My county isn't even processing them yet. Woman Indifferent

Also, for the record, you can still enter federal court buildings with a regular ID. So jury duty etc are still on. This is from the Real ID official FAQ.

You do NOT need a REAL ID to:

  • Drive
  • Vote
  • Purchase alcohol or cigarettes
  • Access hospitals
  • Visit the post office
  • Access federal courts
  • Apply for or receive federal benefits such as social security or veterans’ benefits

The last time I renewed fairly recently there was a list of things I had to bring in Texas:

 Acceptable Documents

To determine what documents will be accepted to verify citizenship or lawful presence status and social security number:

Here's the Checklist and documents you can choose from:
