I think you only need three or four pieces of documentation from the entire list.  In my state, if you have what you need you go to an expedited line at the Registry for renewals.

The only thing I had to show was my passport. Okay, I started out with my passport card, but the geniuses at the Secretary of State's office had no idea what that was so I pulled out my passport book. Apparently they'd actually seen a couple of those.

The saddest thing about Real ID is the lack of uniformity state to state and the absence of a readable data strip or rfid chip that can be accessed by the police when they pull someone over.

Passed in 2005 during the George W. Bush administration, the Real ID Act was inspired in part by the terrorist attacks of 9/11, where most of the terrorists had been able to obtain state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards with fraudulent documents.

Mine already had the star on it.  I did go down (made an appointment though I didn't need to) Just took a few minutes. Brought a long my passport, (to prove citizenship)social security card (to prove work)  and two different official documents to verify my address.  I can't use a birth certificate, because it's in Italian, reason why I had to use my U.S. passport.  Since I had the star I didn't have to get a new card.  My husband didn't have any star on his.  His doesn't come up till January, but he made the appointment anyway and  will have the new card.
