Today I took a consignment check to PNC bank because it was THEIR check they were closer to me and I don't try to add activity to my account.
Sorry @ECBG but what I didn't understand was not wanting to add activity to your own account.
Yeah ... that makes no sense at all. Just deposit the check in your own account and be done with it. Going to another bank is too much of a hassle.

@ECBG Why do you want to avoid activity at your own bank? I've never heard any suggestion that this would be bad for me.

That surprises me. I never would have thought a bank would charge to cash their own checks.
We we opened a PNC account for our son because its closest to his college. I don't have an account there, but I stop by to make deposits into his account every now and then. I must say I've always been impressed with their customer service. Every time I go the manager is at the door to greet me and offer immediate service. Sorry you had to experience that @ECBG I would never have imagined they would have a fee like that, and I would've been annoyed by this inconvenience too.

Banks will no longer cash a check without a fee if you are not a customer.
That's been a few years now?
I don't understand why you don't want to show the activity on your account. If you went to your bank to cash the check, they would have done so for free.

I'm sorry but, your post makes no sense to me because of your statements....
"I don't try to add activity to my account."
What kind of "activity" would be shown on YOUR account from cashing a check?
"I HAD TO GO IN to get my driver's license and the check back"
Go in where? The check back from whom?
"Never argue with a fool. Onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."

And I am thankful for this *all* the time!

Glad it's not just me, on both counts.

Most banks charge $5-10 for cashing their own checks, if you don't have an account with them. You still have to show ID. ..It costs $ to pay the bank tellers. I have heard of PNC bank.
It would be worth it to pay the $10, if you don't want to show the check in your account.

Don't sweat the small stuff.....just drive a bit farther and go to your bank. Rules are rules. If you do not want to pay the $10 fee...... Tough.

Banks not only charge you a fee for cashing checks if you don't have an account but also ask for your thumb print too.
Other than a business transaction, if you need to give someone money, (i.e. student, bride/groom) give them a bank issued gift card instead. That way they don't have to worry about cashing or depositing it.
