Someone I used to work with years ago got a horrible fungus on her fingernail from getting a manicure. She was on various antibiotics for a long time and at one point they thought she might lose her finger.I don't know why I just thought of this but didn't Paula Abdul get a really bad infection while on Idol getting her nails done?
The guy who did my mani that day was so rough...he tore up my cuticles with the buffer pad...I bled all over it and he did nothing....I wonder how many others bled before me on that buff pad..../eek.....never never again.....my primary care doc gave me a prescription and the fungus cleared up quickly...I consider myself lucky.

I don't want strangers touching my feet; I give myself pedicures.

He also said that hotels and pools are notorious breeding grounds for fungus. I always take a shower with flip flops on - LOL
I didn't think about that while I was on vacation!
If we are somewhere on our boat for a weekend and I have to shower at one of those bath houses, I always wear my flip-flops.

I don't think so. But then I don't think the manicures are any safer.

My salon gives their regular customers their own little pouches with all the tools needed such as an emery board, buffer pad, etc. I bring that little pouch to every one of my pedicures and they only use my equipment on my feet which makes me feel a bit safer.

I got a mild fungus. I went to a fabulous salon. Buyer beware.
Same thing happened to me, win. I have been doing my own pedicures. I don't trust that the basins or the tools are sanitized as they should be.
I was going to get one today Magic, and now I'm thinking of passing, LOL. I need to start doing my own pedicures.
I'm kind of scared to get a salon pedi, win. I think I read that bleach needs to sit a while in order to be effective? I'm not sure that is happening when back to back pedi's are scheduled?
Realistically, the chances of us getting another infection are probably slim, so I might just put on my brave face and schedule a pedi if it ever gets warm enough for sandals!
Good morning Magic. I freaked out a bit when the lady told me she thought I had a slight fungus. I went to the dermatologist, and she said it was very mild. I usually go every 3 to 4 weeks, but now I have pushed it back a bit as I'm so squeamish. I am terrible at doing my own pedis. I still may go today, but I will probably be freaking out, LOL, a bit. I think you're right--it's not super common and we probably hear the horror stories.
It does concern me though that they don't clean these jets. It's so gloomy here in Indianapolis right now. The whole week has been bad. I'm taking a day off today to get some things done, but I don't think I'll be enjoying the weather.
have a great weekend!!!
Hey win ~ I might have misspoke. I don't think I had a fungus but rather an infection (or are they the same? LOL). I just started noticing that the toe next to my big toe was hurting. At first it didn't even occur to me that it was from a pedi. But it became red, inflamed and really hurt (especially when I had to put shoes on).
Hope you are enjoying your day! The docks are going in at the lake house tomorrow, but I may stay home if it's not warm and sunny. I, too, could get some stuff done around here. I am toying with the idea of putting our house on the market (where we would go is a mystery), but may do some painting.
You have a great weekend, too!

Yes. I have had my nails cut wrong so that I get an infection. Also got a fungus infection and an ingrown toenail. My podiatrist told me never to go into those salons and that you can get aids.

I did pedicures in a salon for a while.
I worked very hard to maintain a sanitary enviornment but alot of techs don't care.
My boss was drunk half the time so I had to learn and manage on my own.
The moral of the story is choose where you go wisely!

I get so tempted to treat myself to a pedicure, but just the thought of the chance you take in picking up something is enough to squelch it. I'd be so worried that I wouldn't be able to enjoy it.
Have read and seen enough of what can happen to people with just one time that someone slips up with the sanitation, and it's enough to keep me doing my own. It's just not worth the risk, to me, to put myself in that position.
