Has anyone been to a Pain Management Doctor?, I have excruciating knee pain and have had injections for years but they only last about a week and the pain is sometimes unbearable. My doctor referred me to see PM doctor. When I called to make the appointment I was told to bring someone with me because I would not be able to drive home. This struck me funny because this would be my first visit and I would think he would want to find out what my problems were and maybe x-rays and then go from there.

I don't know your circumstances but before I would start taking the strong pain meds that pain doctors give I would seriously consider knee replacement surgery.

Don't know what's wrong with you, but, I would not let him do anything on first visit ,nothing that could prohibit you from driving. Other than that, I have been going to a pain management Dr. For about 14 yrs., and don't know what I would do without him. One very important thing is to make sure he is an anesthetist, and not just a Dr. Who also treats pain. A anest. Studies the central nervous system, which is most important.

If it was me, I could call them and ask them why. But I'm nosy that way, I want to know stuff ahead of time.

I had to make appointments when I had my procedures done by the PM. I would call and find out what they expect to do on the first visit.

I seen at least 4 pain management specialists and always drove myself there and back home. I'll also add that none were able to alleviate my back pain. If you were getting cortisone shots in your knees, they rapidly diminish in effectiveness with time. Then it's time to consider surgery.

My nephew is an anesthesiologist and owns 5 pain clinics.I know I'm talking with him that all new patients go through an evaluation procedure generally on their first visit.during the first visit depending on the age and the problem of the patient he has told me that many times he suggests bringing someone along to this visit. He believes that many times this could help some patients better understand the procedures and how successful they might be for them.

It's a precaution, just in case you elect to have treatment or an injection that same day. If it's available, some patients prefer immediate relief. There's no need for them to suffer longer than they have too. My sister was like that.

Josie, I agree with what crystaltree said in her post, as this has happened to me.

Have you considered knee replacement surgery! If possible, it's far better to find a permanent solution than to become dependent on drugs and "pain treatments".
