@songbird You're right about it being Un-American to give up one's freedom to own a car and a gun.
I love my car, it's a friend waiting for me in grocery store parking lots, it's a cozy refuge when I'm out and about on stormy days. My gun keeps me safe from carjackers, muggers, and home invaders.
It's good to be American.

Never owned a gun. Till I started on these forums I didn’t even know you could carry one around. Although here you can’t.
Never knew so many people had one and it was so important. I’m in my seventies and had never even thought about it.
Dont know when I’ll stop driving although my husband does most of it. It’s not really something I enjoy. I just got a new used car though and really like it.

There are a lot of women who give up driving too soon because of age and fear and start depending on others which limits your world and makes one less self reliant.I have more problems with 16 year olds on the road which I think is entirely too young.
My 93 year old female friend gave up her license. She only drive 2miles t o the th and back. Now she feels trapped a prisoner In her own home. She says she feels in jail and wish she never gave it up.
Seems she could ride a bicycle for that distance, safely on sidewalks.
@sidsmom Many streets have no sidewalks.
Most urban areas have sidewalks.
If the area is that small and/or rural not to have sidewalks,
just....walk.

Walk along side of a road that doesn't have a sidewalk?
Yeah, that sounds safe.
Not!
Also, not everyone can physically walk that far.

If there's a will, there's a way.

And one of the ways is driving.

It's illegal to ride a bike on sidewalks; dangerous to those who are walking on them. They are called sidewalks not siderides.

Again....good 'ole walking is the best bet.
Or bus service. Or city van service.
Or a taxi/Uber/Lyft
If there's a will, there's a way.
Or it's just easier to B&M about not having a car.
What a pompous compliant of 'feeling like a prisoner' w/out a car.
Many, many people don't have access and/or money
for a car/insurance/upkeep. 🤷♀️

What many people have or don't have is irrelevant. I'm not them nor do I care to be. I'm responsible to look after myself and make decisions that best benefit me, increase my happiness and decrease what brings me displeasure. In short, I enjoy driving and have no plans to give it up when I become aged.
I'm also not giving up sugar; cake and ice cream, among other things, give me pleasure.

Very true. Once a Senior gives up a car, she has to give up plenty more. If she doesn't have any family, what is she supposed to do? You need a car. Most people live away from stores, etc. How is she supposed to function without a car? No wonder most seniors refuse to stop driving. Even if they take away the licence, she still has the car. And she will drive it.
