Hubby and I had to make a grocery trip to Walmart yesterday.  A couple of interesting things.

There was minimal items on most shelves.  Pasta completely gone.  No pork in the meat case.  Very few 1 lb packages of hamburger.  But some lady with the bottom of her cart filled with the packages of hamburger.  Maybe 10 to 15 packages of toilet paper left on the shelf.

When we checked out I asked the cashier if people were nice to her or did she have rude people giving her trouble because they were out of stuff.  She said a lot of people would be nasty about their being out of items.  They were limiting bread to 1 loaf per customer.  She said some man came to her checkout with 4 loaves of bread.  When she told him there was a limit of 1 he got mad crushed 3 loaves and bought one.  People have sent their kids to get the prepared chicken and wings, etc and eat it while in the store and not tell anyone.  When she sees that and knows definitely what kids belong to what parents she rings it up and does not tell them.  So they pay for it and dont know it.

So, there are many people (I use the term loosely) out there that are only for themselves.

Sad very sad.

Re: Our grocery trip yesterday

The most dispicable, the guy who crushes the bread and ruins it for someone else.  Grow up and don't be such a baby.  Spoiled brat.  I've just about had it.

Newflash:  73 year old woman trounces a bread crusher in aisle 3.  Clean up on aisle 3.!!

Re: Our grocery trip yesterday

They have no choice but to limit purchases.  Unfortunately, too many people are only looking out for themselves.  I guess pork will be the next MIA in meats.  Haven't seen a pork chop in quite awhile!   I did buy some chicken though on Monday.  Just for the record I bought one package only Smiley Happy

Re: Our grocery trip yesterday

I went in yesterday afternoon and the difference was amazing compared to the past two weeks.  Other than the toilet paper/paper towel aisle it was fully stocked.  The bakery dept looked fabulous with all the new freshly made and packaged products and produce was full as well.  I finally was able to get some eggs.  They did have a one per family limit but it was an 18 count size.  They were very active with many employees unloading boxes in the frozen food section.  Customers in the store and lots of people shelving.  I have never seen that many boxes being flattened inside of a grocery store that is not considered like a Sam's or Costco.  I am sure it goes on at night but right now when the truck rolls in I guess they hit the shelves immediately.

The streets had so much less traffic for a typical afternoon and I realized I have not seen or even heard any children in a couple of weeks.

Re: Our grocery trip yesterday

The first time we went to Sam's after the Governor pretty much shut all non essentials businesses down, It was wiped out. Shelves were empty, freezers empty and if their was any product people were loading up their carts with whatever they could buy.

The second time we went to Sam's the shelves were well stocked and freezers full. But there were signs every few feet stating Limit 1. Did not stop people from loading up their carts with as much as they wanted.

When I went to check out. There was a lady going from check out lane to check out lane. I thought she must know alot of people that she knows all these people in just about every different lane. Here she was passing the Sam's membership card from one "friend" to another. The woman in front of me was one of her "friends". So we had to wait until she was given the membership card before she could start her self-check out.

Re: Our grocery trip yesterday

[ Edited ]

Yesterday I went to BJ's at 8 a.m. to take advantage of the "senior hour". There were about 50 of us seniors in line when they opened the doors and everyone was well-behaved. BJ's was very well-stocked all things considered, but had limits on items that were subject to hoarding: 1 package of tp (yes!), 2 units of any kind of fresh meat, 2 units of Soft Soap refills, etc. The shelves with limitations were clearly marked. I didn't see any hand sanitizer, but was able to get Ensure and hearing aid batteries for my Aunt.

Everyone maintained their distance from each other and I didn't notice anyone acting out. The staff were so nice, too. They were still restocking some items, so you couldn't access those aisles. In those cases, the staff would bring you what you needed. They only had 1 "manned" cash register, but most of the self-serve registers were available. Since most of us entered at the same time, many of us finished around the same time, causing lines at check-out. No problem! We were all so grateful for the senior hour, we wouldn't have thought of throwing a temper tantrum.

We're all in this together and shouldn't take out our frustrations on the folks who are trying to help us. IMHO, if stores experience shoppers acting badly, they should penalize the offenders. Anyone caught hoarding merchandise or abusing an employee will be escorted out of the store without finalizing their purchase. And I don't even want to think about people eating food in the store to avoid paying for it!

Re: Our grocery trip yesterday

A big reason why I plan to stay away from the large grocery stores for as long as possible, besides the obvious, is to distance myself from such people.

Went to Aldi and the butcher shop first thing this morning. Had to remind some older guy to keep his distance behind me in line. There were few people at the butcher, as I expected. Paid a premium for the few meats I bought there. Worth it to avoid people.

All we really have now is our health, sanity and peace. I plan to protect all three every way I can.

Re: Our grocery trip yesterday

I hope she charged him for all four loaves. Right before the chaos started we were in Costco; the entire back corner of the store, where the toilet paper and paper towels usually are, was blocked off because people would get so upset that there wasn’t any, they would start fighting with each other. People have lost their minds. The cash registers locked and would not allow more than the limited number of some items to be purchased. Shoppers were not taking that well! We saw a man try and grab the poor guy who was only the cashier, not the person preventing anyone from buying stuff. I saw a man take a case of water out of someone else’s cart and outfit in his own because he was too lazy to go get one himself.
