What happened was very sad, but he was very foolish. What was his reason for visiting? It's not like he was a journalist doing an undercover story or something worthwhile. It sounds like a trip for privileged people who have nothing better to do.

@JJsMom

Really?

I think all the military action in the area is probably what's causing all the tension between us and NK....not some tourist taking a poster as a souvenir, but that's just my opinion.

Years ago we had a friend go to the then Soviet Union. He was over 21 and just wanted to go but no one could stop him. He did return w/out any problems. I'm just sayin'.

well, this thread won't last long. Too bad people can't keep a thread civil so we can have a discussion about something like this. Too much to ask, I know.

Young people are fearless and think they are immortal.

Otto was part of a legitimate tour group, Young Pioneer Tours.

I would never go, but obviously many people do go on these tours.

I wouldn't go because NK uses this for propaganda and to get our money.

Lots of Americans go to China as a tourist and it's not uncommon for the tour to go to Pyongyang for 1 or 2 nights.

I think it's crazy but he didn't deserve to die.

wha?

Smiley Surprised

Wha? People have autopsies all the time. Celebrities die, they have autopsies.  So I'm asking if it's really that big of a deal to have one. You still have a body to bury. If he were my kid, I'd want answers. Hope that answered your wha?

@JJsMomSo you buy into the "white privilege" mantra that was issued about Otto in the early days of his arrest.

SMDH again.

He was a tourist.

Is there another reason he felt the need to cross over into NK that I'm not aware of?

I didn't say he was the cause of the tension, but he has certainly escalated it.

The two Pacific targets are San Francisco and LA, as named by N.Korea.

The latest report on the news was that it is thought NK will be able to have that kind of missile ready by 18 months.

Someone in other parts of America, in a more distant state, might not give it another thought or tell us not to worry, but I can assure you it comes up in conversation here... I can't speak for LA.
