Total insanity, unless you are familiar with the car you are buying, meaning you have already driven it.  The "fit" of the car is very important to me.  I drive Pontiac Vibes, they just "fit" me.  Since they aren't made anymore, I'll soon have to change.

We knew exactly what car, model, and color we wanted.  My husband sent the specs over the phone to three dealers and told them he would buy the one that came back with the lowest price. The car was delivered to the front door the next day.  We are sure we got the best price.

@depglass, what models are you looking at? I've got an almost 15 year old Toyota Matrix, which is the same as your Vibe. I've been thinking about a Subaru Crosstrek as I want AWD. Also love the look of the new Toyota Corolla hatchback, but it's not available with AWD.

I would be open to buying online, provided I've already test driven the model I'm interested in and have made a definite decision.

For a new car I woud absolutely buy on line as a previous poster indicated.

I buy newer pre-owned, so I find the car on line, then check it out at the dealership. Last two cars I bought this way: one dealership happened to be local, the other was an hour's drive away. I rented a car to get there, bought the car for DS and the dealership returned my rental to the local Enterprise so I could drive the new purchase home.

I am curious.  Do you go to the dealership to test drive the car?

I would buy a new car on line if I had already made up my mind what I wanted.

A few years ago, my car was hit by a crazy driver and totaled.  I needed another one ASAP.  I found a car that I wanted on E-bay and went to see it in person ..about 30 minutes away.  I purchased the car.

We have also sold cars on e-bay.  The buyers pay a transport company to pick up the car half way across the country.  I don't think it is odd at all.

My employer bought one online back in 2003 brand new and drove for a few years until his son started driving.  He just sold it in early 2017.  No problems at all.

In a few years, we'll all be doing that.

Can you not get the same price from a local dealership?
