You do not need to give them a "shower" at all if they are already home furnished. Just have a nice gathering for lunch or brunch. No need for gifts. You don't even need to call it a shower. Just a nice party to wish the couple well and happiness. And yes, a gift card shower does sound tacky and very boring.

Let the couple pick a charity or two, have an event (afternnoon brunch, cocktail party or whatever is the thing in their social circle), and ask for no gifts, but if wishing to gift, make it for the charity listed.
