One Person Led to 100+ Infections

[ Edited ]

In one small suburb on the outskirts of New York City, coronavirus cases jumped from one to more than 100 in less than 10 days.

Now the state's governor is trying to catch up to the virus by setting up a containment area around New Rochelle and deploying the National Guard to assist with food deliveries and clean public spaces.

"We'll go in, we'll clean the schools and assess the situation," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. "This will be a period of disruption for the community."

New Rochelle is about 25 miles outside of New York City.

The issue, the governor says, is "a matter of life and death." And it started with one resident.

The 50-year-old attorney, who works near Grand Central Station in Manhattan, tested positive for the virus on March 2 and was hospitalized at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Cuomo said.

The governor later said the man was New York City's first case of community spread -- meaning officials could not trace the source of his infection.

The man had an underlying respiratory condition that made him vulnerable to the virus but he was stable and improving, officials also said later.

17 people in two days

Just two days after the man's positive results, on March 4, his 20-year-old son, a student at New York's Yeshiva University, also tested positive. School officials said he was showing symptoms of the virus.

The wife and 14-year-old daughter of the attorney both also tested positive on the same day.

So did the neighbor who drove him to the hospital.
And a friend of the attorney.

The friend's wife, two sons and daughter tested positive that day too.

The day after, on March 5, the governor says eight other people connected to the attorney tested positive for the virus.

The same day, the governor announced sweeping self-quarantine directions, urging more than 1,000 New Yorkers to stay home.

And 11 more in a day

On March 6, three members of the Young Israel Congregation of New Rochelle, where the attorney attended, tested positive for the virus.

Another two friends of the attorney tested positive, too. And four more people related to the attorney also had the virus, the governor said.

And so did two residents from nearby Rockland County who worked as caterers in the bar mitzvah the attorney was believed to have attended.

23 others linked to one person

On March 7, the governor announced 23 others linked to the attorney had the virus.

The day after, he said 12 more cases were reported in Westchester County, which is home to New Rochelle. By March 10, there were 108 cases in New Rochelle.

As Cuomo announced the deployment of the National Guard Tuesday, he declared New Rochelle a "true geographic cluster."

The National Guard will be helping combat the spread through March 25, the governor said.

"It is a true ... phenomenon," he said.

Re: One Person Led to 100+ Infections

This is not the flu.  I was reading online the difference between the flu and covid19.  Those differences are making this a national crisis.

Sadly, and not without much consideration we have cancelled an initiatory trip to Egypt, as well as a 4 day workshop with a favorite world renowned teacher, and another spiritual leader who is visiting in a couple of weeks.  These were difficult decisions, but necessary....there would be a lot of hugging/handshakes and close proximity sitting next to each other.  Hopefully, we will all make wise decisions during these challenging days.  This attorney made a critical impact on many lives.

Of course that one person could be the cause of hundreds being infected.

That one came in contact with 5 who each came in contact with 3 and on and on.

Some people are not taking this serious, just look at replies on all the threads about this virus, i find that  just not logical.

When you lose some one you L~O~V~E, that Memory of them, becomes a TREASURE.

This is an interesting scenario, which I'm sure has been and will be repeated many times over.  It sounds like the man did nothing wrong, he just didn't know he was infected until it was too late.  I hope all these people make a full recovery.

I feel like its only a matter of time before this is widespread in this country, just like the flu ends up being widespread a lot of times. It seems to spread very quickly.

The county in Texas where my daughter lives had three people who had it. Now there are 22 people on self quarantine there. If I understood her correctly.

Of course he was the first to present but how do we know he didn't get it from any of the people around him that have tested positive with no symptoms and then spread it.

I find it odd that we have two case north of me, I believe they are a couple, and so far no cases around them. They just announced they went to a gym before they were diagnosed so maybe something will pop up there. Seems like they must have infected someone but maybe thay have no symptoms?

@phoenixbrd  Friends canceled their trip to Egypt yesterday as well.  They had been booked several years ago and the tour company canceled Egyptian trips at that time for safety reasons.  Like you -- they were so excited about this trip.  In their case -- one of them has underlying health issues -- so there was no choice.  We have friends who have canceled trips all over the world -- and one couple who actually left last week for their trip to Vietnam/Cambodia/Thailand.  I hope that everything works out well for them.

I think there are a lot of people who may be asymptomactic, or who haven't been correctly diagnosed with it. My state is still reporting we have no active cases of it. I just don't know if I buy that or not.
