I'm not doubting you at all, Ford, but I seriously doubt the man's story. Desertion is not rewarded with a desk job and then the drama of his whole unit being wiped out.

I think it was an attention getting mechanism on his part and a way to imply he was a "bad boy". Sort of like saying "Don't expect too much from me. Look what I did to my buddies in wartime."

It wasn't his fault those young men died. You seem to be able to diagnose him, where I never could. He was very troubled by this, I knew that, but it was not discussed again. The dating relationship did not last long. I did not get the vibe that he was lying, but then, as I said, it ended anyway.

I didn't mean their deaths were his fault. I meant that he betrayed their trust. Soldiers in a unit have to trust that they have each other's back. He let them down. I just don't believe that a soldier on route to the war zone has access to getting on any flight he wants.
