My mom was so old fashioned,  I never heard her say brassiere or bra. It was always an "undergarment".  LOL

Re: Old fashioned words

[ Edited ]

I don't know if anyone's heard of these 2 -my southern Baptist grandmother instead of saying any curse words would say: "WORDS!!"

She said that covered them all lol!

Also she'd say

"She is off my list."

(the people she no longer talked to or didn't like anymore-some unforgiveable thing in her eyes).

And I'll never forget when she said standing very close to me,

"I have a bone to pick with you."-gulp!

I don't remember what it was that she was upset with me for.

Oh she also said, "Well my stars!"

and also: "Bless her heart." (while shaking her headWoman LOL

Now we call them "Body Shapers" or Spanx but when I was a small girl my mother wore a "girdle".  It had elastic snaps to which you attached your nylons.

I remember she never wore a dress without her girdle and nylons along with her high heels.  Of course in those days the heels she wore were always a thicker heel with a strap that attached to her ankle.

Oil cloth. or "Earrlll" Cloth.  This was a floor covering before "Linoleum".  Linoleum gave way to no-wax floors.

"You'll catch your death of cold walking barefoot on the Earrll Cloth"

Stoop for back porch. "Don't sit on the stoop, you'll get hemorrhoids.

Parlor is still common for living room in New England.

Also "Baahthh" for shower.  I'm going to jump in the Baatthhh"

I still use:
Meandering
Alas
Kleenex
Shenanigans, Mahem, Malarkey, Highjinx (especially when describing the games my dog gets up to).

This has certainly been an interesting and entertaining thread! I've enjoyed reading the responses, a few I hadn't ever heard before. ❤️

Depending on the particular word used, this is what used to be:

Settee 1:

Settee 2

Sectional #2

Couch

Now, Society has found it acceptable to roll all these into an acceptable ID as  "Couch" (i think) which certainly helps for commonality all over.  Woman Happy

A physic. Yes my grandparents called an enema that. They also referred to hemorrhoids as piles.

Instead of saying he was thinking about something, my grandfather would say he was studying about it.  For instance you might ask "What do you want for lunch" and he would say "Let me study about it and I'll let you know".
