Old ELVIS movies on TCM this afternoon.....

Turner Classic Movies is apparently having an old Elvis movie marathon this afternoon. I like to watch old classic movies like the ones with Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, etc., and was checking to see what was on.

The Elvis movies were nothing more than a showcase for his singing and to promote more records, but I could live with the silly story lines, bad acting, and bad special effects just to see him sing! I always loved his voice, and fell madly in love with him in the fifties when he first hit the big time!

After the movies, there is a 2-hour documentary about him just prior to his 1970 Las Vegas opening. As I got older and he got older, I thought how odd it is that so many men just get more handsome with each passing year. Women get prettier too, but not as much as men, IMO. I loved him in his thirties when he did his "comeback" concerts. I got to see him in person at concerts during that time period and then just a few months before he passed away. I was so sad to see the difference in him at the last concert I attended - he just didn't have the breath and the range and that smoothness to his voice that he had before.

I've lived many many years since I first saw him, but I still think he was probably the handsomest, secksiest man I've ever seen... probably number one, but at least in the top three! {#emotions_dlg.tt1} And I still absolutely love to listen to his records and watch videos and tapes of him. What a voice! {#emotions_dlg.wub}

I have been watching them all morning and was surprised I never saw one of them, the one with the Great Dane. They are pretty silly but who doesn't love Elvis. I saw him in 1971 for my birthday.

Happy Birthday, Elvis!

OMG - I have that first picture (with the guitar) on my bedroom wall. Love that pic. That was from the '68 Comeback Special, when he was his very MOST sexiest. (can I say that word here? - we'll see)

You got by with it! And I agree - that and the next two or three years. I can't remember which concert he did around 1969 or '70 in the blue jumpsuit, but that one and the one in the white jumpsuit from Hawaii - oh my! {#emotions_dlg.rolleyes} I have that '68 Comeback Special on a VHS tape that I recorded - I need to find it. I have several very special VHS tapes that I need to transfer over to DVD's - hope they're still okay.

Re: Old ELVIS movies on TCM this afternoon.....

It's too bad Col. Parker (so they say) wouldn't let Elvis take the part of Conrad Birdie in Bye Bye Birdie, a part actually based on Elvis' own drafting into the service.

He would have been a lot better in the part than the guy who actually played Birdie. I can't even remember his name but for me, at least, he is the very weak link in a movie with an otherwise very strong and well-known cast. Every time I see that movie, I keep thinking how much better Elvis would have been.

Elvis, even though trapped in ridiculous movies most of the time, was really a very fine actor as shown in some of his earlier, more dramatic roles, like King Creole.

That said, one of my favorite Elvis movies is the totally ridiculous Stay Away Joe. It always makes me laugh. I also really like Girl Happy and Viva Las Vegas.

One of my favorite Westerns is Rio Bravo and even though I love Ricky Nelson, every time I see it, I always wonder how Elvis would done in that role.

I'd forgotten - I'm pretty sure I also have '68 Comeback Special on VHS also. For me, THAT was it! That black leather jacket and those black leather pants! That hair! That beautiful face and voice. oh yeah *melting*

I wonder if they have it on DVD or Bluray now. I'd be up for that.

He had a beautiful face, and a voice to match. It's such a shame that drugs ruined him in his youth. His last few years were so sad.

Yes . . . being a 50's girl, I fell in love also. "Heartbreak Hotel" was his first big hit. He's another one that there will never be another like him.

If ever in Memphis take the Graceland tour. I was never an Elvis fan, but the tour is wonderful.
