@lovesallanimals,

I forgot that too! And I often think of it because my father-in-law once gave me money to go out and buy some nice clothes. The first 2 skirts I got wasn't quite what he had in mind lol-a pink and also turqoise kind of peasant skirts. He said I want you to get really nice clothes.

So then I went to Casual Corner with my mother and got a cranberry peplum jacket/blazer with black buttons and an a-line black skirt. The jacket no longer fits too well but I'll never give it away though I did finally give the skirt away because I knew I'd never fit in it again. At the time they fit like they were made for me.

It is still one of of the nicest and most well made of clothes I have.

I don't know what kind of material but it was lined and I never find that kind of nice material anymore anywhere.

And I also got Easy Spirit black patent leather shoes with a small heal.

I forgot about MERVYNS.   Oh boy, that store was fabulous. Back in late 60's early 70's, when women sewed...they had the best yardage dept in basement@,  the whole, basement.  For someone who sewed it was like Santa land. lol.  Later before they closed, it got too confusing with the coupons and sales. They changes sales every day,  you had to know what day to go in, scour the ads to know what day the item you wanted was on sale. I was told everything in store was on sale at least one day a month. When they had big sales omg, they practically gave the stuff away. Trendy clothes too with classics and fairly well made.  OPEN OPEN OPEN

It's sad.... the select we used to have. Back when shopping was an art!  Now we have

macys

target

amazon

QVC

Where I live we have an outlet with name brand store fronts, but everything is a little dated and you have to be lucky.

now most things are online if you want selection in size and color..

Re: Old Department Stores gone now

I remember going through the multilevel Sears stores looking for dad's tools and clothes, ice skates, appliances, household and garden things.  As I had my own household, I depended on Sears portrait studios, appliances, curtains, and even clothing.  And I can't help but remember the Sears Christmas catalogue!  What fun to cut out pictures.  Too early for its time.

Montgomery Wards was an alternative to Sears.

Woolworth was a shopping center alternative to Venture and K-Mart.

Harzfelds was a beautiful department store kind of like Niemens.  They had beautiful boxes and service.

Marshall Fields (sp?) in Chicago.  It had the most wonderful windows, huge clocks on all 4 corners, sent pkgs on Christmas eve, tea room tree,  toy floor where kids couldtry the toys and pick their favorites and the most real Santa.

The tee room was called the Walnut Room where you could dine but had to reserve a place.  Real classy!

Long gone from our closest mall are:

Macy's

JC Penney

The Broadway

Bullock's

Sears

Mervyn's

No longer have KMart, Burlington Coat Factory, Marshall's and Ross stores in nearby strip malls, needless to say I don't go out and do much shopping anymore, mostly online for the convenience.

on the bay - I still have some shoes that I bought there.  Gorgeous sling backs with kitten heels, some not even worn yet!  They are still  in style and absolutely gorgeous.  Cannot part with them even after all these years.  I used to work in the World Trade Center and they had a store on the concourse.

I will always associate B. Altman's with my move to NYC in 1988.  It was such a lovely store and very close to my apartment on E 33rd Street.

I don't think I'll ever get used to Lord & Taylor being gone.  I no longer live in NYC, but walking by that empty shell of it's former flagship location on 5th Avenue is so sad.  I loved their display windows especially at Christmas time.  I always enjoyed shopping there.
