@Porcelain ..... @chickenbutt ....... He lived in a state that does not mandate the wearing of a mask. That being the case who really is to blame?
@Sheila P-Burg, even where mandated there are so many loopholes and lack of enforcement in most places that the mandate is meaningless yet people that care about themselves and others wear them.
However, there are NO mandates NOT to wear a mask so if he did not he is to blame not only for his own death but the illness, potential long term, still unknown effects of Covid and potentially the death of others he may have infected.

He might have been a good guy before, by serving his country, and that is a VERY good thing. But once you cause damage and/or possible death to others you are not a good guy anymore. You are a bad guy.
@chickenbutt Did he do that? "Cause damage and/or a possible death to others"?
you make a choice. And then you live with the choice. You're choosing for yourself, not other people. He thought the right thing for him to do was not wear a mask.
people here should be grateful. If everybody wore a mask and nobody died, what would we talk about?🙄

So very sad. I just recently lost my Dad. He was a decorated US Army veteran. He was so much older than this veteran and he had dementia. Still my Dad understood what was going on with this virus and the seriousness of it. Thankfully he never tested positive for it, he died from other serious health issues.
The loss of this veteran is painful, because it was so unnecessary. He was so young.

What a strange and discomforting post, from beginning to end.

@esmerelda Actually in this instance that's exactly what he did. Because in choosing for himself he chose a possible negative outcome for others. And who knows how many others. That's the whole point of wearing a mask -- you are respecting and protecting others when you choose to wear a mask yourself. Others. That's the operative word in this pandemic. That's why you see the word "selfish" so much around here.
I seriously doubt he thought it was "the right thing for him to do". IMO people who choose not to wear masks are either denying the science or have this bug up their rear about their "freedoms" and "constitutional rights". The irony is.... they don't realize the result of their choice not to wear a mask is actually depriving them of their freedom indefinitely because they will never get back to the freedoms they enjoy as long as this pandemic goes on and on.

@Deree I wear a mask to protect ME. If others want to be protected, they should do the same. If somehow my mask also protects them, they are welcome.
I am my priority.
At the same time I don't criticize anyone who doesn't wear one for whatever reason.
eta...how do we KNOW he caused damage or death to others?

@esmerelda All the medical experts have explained over and over that you wearing a mask only protects the other person. Funny thing is I have always said it works both ways as it is a physical barrier. That's my common sense anyway. Bottom line is, it is for the protection of both parties.
How do we KNOW he caused damage or death to others? I certainly do not know but I'm sure his contacts will be traced and tested. At least I hope and assume they will be. Nevertheless he endangered others' health and lives by not wearing a mask and I think that's a pretty horrible thing to do. JMO. YMMV.

Wrong: he WAS arrogant and selfish. How many other has he infected?

@Marp ...... I am not saying he is not to blame. That is not for me to judge. What I am saying is that when you are talking about a deceased person please have some compassion. There are ways to point fingers without showing disdain and hate. He made a mistake. A deadly mistake and he paid for it.
A person that serves my country has earned my respect. To call them selfish is not acceptable to me. He had the courage and strength to do what I know I would not.
Even though they said he was healthy I do not know his military history and what bearing that may or may not have effected his decision making. I know several that have PTSD and their way of thinking at times is frustrating.
If our leadership, be it state or country, does not give an indication that masks are needed they must take some of the responsibility.
The gentleman mentioned lived in my State. At the moment my leadership is, in my opinion, sending mixed messages.
