We live on 10 acres.  No worries about possible dwindling of wildlife here. Each late afternoon/evening we have a herd of deer grazing somewhere on our property. Two days ago, the 8 pointer graced us with an appearance.  There's also a 4 pointer but I'm sure he'll get fewer gf's than the older one once the romancing begins.

We also have squirrels, groundhogs and at least one skunk.  Saw her the other day.  She sprayed my dogs a few months back and they just now can get wet without stinking.  We also had a goose family for about 6 weeks this summer. Fun to watch, especially flying lessons for babies, but a mess on our long driveway.  There have been muskrats in our pond (who dug a few holes before we decided to relocate them), in addition to fish, ducks, and occasionally a heron. Got tons of birds, too, like 3 different kinds of woodpeckers, tufted titmouse, goldfinches, blue jays, robins, starlings, purple finches, English sparrows, red-tailed hawks, crows, chickadees, catbirds and mourning doves, just to name a few.  Smiley Very Happy

@MamaWick   This saddens my heart, but my brain understands.  It's a shame that there could not be some open space left for wildlife. But of course, there would be the new human inhabitants who would complain about the deer.

Unfortunately, wildlife is at the losing end.

I hope you and PapaWick can still do your part to help the deer, and that the deer stay safe.

I was affarid this would happen, those tiny lots, homes being built, it is very sad,too bad you could not buy up some of it ,to leave wild for those deer.

When you look at our house from the street, there are 2 lots on the left.  The furthest to the left is owned by the house 3 lots down, is a massive drainage field and can not be built on, which is why they bought it. The other lot to our immediate left is owned by a couple here who do buy up (and own at least a dozen) random lots to keep green space.  The lot to our immediate right is owned by a couple who live a few hours away.  We have contacted them to see if they were interested in selling but they plan to build in a few years when they retire.  We have asked them if they change their mind to please let us know.

sofiesafers and spurt

I relate to your anger and disgust over the great loss of land and greedy develpers  buying up everything , building something not necessary and unsightly, filling their bank accounts  and then moving on to the next conquest.

Sofiesafers, I too live at NJ and while I am happy here in general, I do agree with you.  Many times I have asked who comprises the planning boards at my local government.  I never get an answer.  I want credentials, qualifications, these people make poor decisions regarding development because they are often real estate people, builders, those with special interests.  How about some environmentalists to balance it out so it is fair to everyone.

I will not say any  more because I am not looking for controversy, it is my opinion.  Also I apologize to the Wicks for posting this when their concerns are the deer.  Thanks for all you do!

What you say is so true ...... Our Zoning Commissoner is an IDIOT and "people in charge" let him get away with it due to the reasons you stated.....I have shared my thoughts with "those in charge"......

What I can't figure out there is just NO COMMON SENSE....in an area already congested with traffic he will approve more building (apartments and offices) which  create even more traffic, then they turn around and complain about air quality and about too many "ozone action days" .... And due to traffic congestion these apartment/offices end up failing due to traffic congestion!!!  And what I was told that not much money is even generated because of the costs for the required infrastructure the city must provide for these developments...It doesn't make sense....SMH!!  I wonder if there will be any trees, greenry or animals left in our future...😥

I agree  It is all about money and greed and power to do these things, add corruption and you have the mix which creates the destructon.

@Spurt    I know, its so crazy!  Why can't they just leave the land, trees, flowers and animals alone!  Sometimes I wish I lived in Mayberry, with Andy and Aunt Bee.  Much simpler.

That's what a friend mentioned to me---she said retires she's moving to a small Texas Hill Country town where she and her husband can enjoy the beautiful outdoors and nature, trees, flowers, and clean air and simpler lifestyle...
