OT Need help with 2005 Ford Escape gauges

I put this question on Electronics yesterday with 0 replies. I'm considering a 2005 Ford Escape all wheel drive to get me through the winter as DH will be leaving for a job of several weeks shortly. This vehicle has two round gauges right in the middle. The left gauge says FUEL ECON and when I test drove it. it was running between 3.0 and 4.9. This hopefully isn't the miles per gallon gauge, and I'd sure like to know what it is. This is at a used car lot, not a Ford dealer.
