The teacher probably meant "text structure." That would entail knowing how different written texts are composed in similar ways. For example, you expect biographies to follow certain patterns: chronological, cause effect, descriptions, etc. One would read a novel, generally and find: setting, characters, themes, etc. Given the different genres, science fiction would emphasize entirely different literary elements compared with historical fiction.

I'm not a teacher, but did have two kids who went to schools in a district where the students are challenged to excel. That seems fine for fifth grade, to me.
usually, parents complain that the schools are being too easy on the kids.

As a former (mind reader), er, teacher, I think the OP is concerned that there is more than 1 test a day before the holidays.
@maestra
Aha. That was not odd at all at this time of where I went to school. I am not a teacher, but I was a student and see nothing strange about that.

I have to ask what difference it makes to the students...that the timing is "before the holidays"? This sounds like a parent-created problem to me.
For the students, it's the end of the semester, so yes, there will be more testing and more final reports due.
They got the schedule in advance, so therefore they, with the help of their parents, should be able to plan their time to get all their studying and work accomplished.

It's all about data collection. And then analyzing that data to drive instruction. I know it seems like a lot of assessments but that's how it is in education today.

Well throw great literature and writing out the window in one fell swoop! LO!!!! Really? How about creativity? I sure wouldn't expect science fiction to follow a set pattern or contain set elements and historical fiction another. . .
Good grief am I out of the loop. . . . !!!!!!!

It's important to understand that certain genres have certain patterns and literary elements. Recognizing these patterns and elements helps the reader make sense of what they're reading and thus supports comprehension.

I remember hearing Jaclyn Smith being asked on a talk show what she's been up to lately.
And she practically yelled 'I have a 5th grader! Do you know what homework is like for a 5th grader?"
I thought to myself 'huh?' and BOOM the homework started rolling in like never before.
Like that night.
She jinxed me (us)!

Thanks for the support Kalli. To Sooner: great literature, art, music, expository writing, dance, math, etc are not devoid of creativity because patterns are taught. Quite the opposite can occur. Literacy research has advanced signicantly since the 1970s and knowing how knowledge is structured is essential.
