I came outside late afternoon yesterday to see big fat street cones sitting on our lawn close to the curb. Everyone on my side of the street had the cones sitting there. On it was a sign that said no parking of any kind tomorrow (today) I guess it was street work. But oh my. Not only did they dig in to the street, they practically destroyed it. Big craters all along my side of street. Today is the day I do my instacart and laundry. I quit work early on Friday, to do the rest. Some people left cars/trucks on the other side of the street, but they had to move them in a hurry. Just a mass of craters. Some cars got stuck. Then a huge mountain of asphalt came. They're in the process of pouring it in to the craters. Instacart was supposed to deliver today. I hung outside my house flagging down the instacart driver. He had to park on a intersection curb to deliver the food. I have no idea what they were doing. It just happened so fast. One of the cars got towed, I saw that. Our cars are in the driveway but catn't leave. There's a huge gaping crater by the end of the driveway. Can't get out.

I had that all last summer. all our streets were dug up and huge craters in it's place. no cars allowed through. Then at night they covered those holes with steel so anyone that drove over made such a loud noise!
They were replacing all our underground gas lines.(huge underground pipes)
The whole town was all torn up . ....and ohhhhh ,the noise!
Between the gas leaks and the disruption and them installing all the meters outside the house (digging up our landscaping) and removing all our old inside meters ( leaving messy filled in holes in our foundations) it was a noisy ,uncomfortable summer.
But now it is over........sigh
Now they sent out notices that there is lead in our water!!!
I wonder if the water pipes are next?????? ![]()

@songbird OMG! That sounds horrible! I can't believe they would do that without previous notice. What are they digging for?

@MalteseMomma @haddon9 They had come several months ago to put down new gas lines. They finally fished that. But left the street a wreck. Nearly impossible to drive. When that was done, we thought that was it till they repaved the road. But that happens in the summer. We had advanced notice for the gas lines. That was fun. They came in our basements to align the gas lines. But nothing for a long time. Now suddenly this, without advanced warning. I tried asking them what they were doing, but I couldn't get close to them and the noise was really loud. I just looked and they are spreading the asphalt (I guess) in to the craters in front of my house. Hoping we can get out. I have a prescription to pick up.

They should have given notice, before doing such massive work on your street. Well at least you were able to get your Instacart order.

@songbirdDouble ouch!
Here in my part of Florida we've been told street and highway work can move faster than usual because we're still on lockdown and the traffic is minimal. That's proven to be true on a major street near me.
When work first started, I expected a mess for months and months. Although I haven't seen a report in any news, in the 10 days between 2 pharmacy-supermarket trips, I was really pleased by the progress.
Hope that works on your street- esp the crater keeping you in the driveway!

I guess that is one way to enforce social distancing and stay at home orders! LOL

Sounds like it was impossible to give you advanced notice. From your telling - sounds like a sink hole developed suddenly. Perhaps the ground shifted - from previous new gas line work.
I wouldn't be so quick to object about your highway department. In NYS cities often have water lines go bust under busy streets.

I'm seeing this work around my town as well. No better time to do it than when traffic is light. I hope summer is really good for us all. Delivery trucks and delivery vehicles are all over the road. Thankful we have online orders. But I'm itching to get out and roam. Remain safe.

Wow. We had major road work several years ago, and we could always get in/out of our driveways. It was not always pretty, but we managed. When they finally got to the last bit of paving, they did one side of the streeet at a time, and alerted us that we would not have have in/out ability well in advance. We parked in our neighbors driveway across the street, and they did the same when it was the opposite side.
Also, a pro tip. Keep your windows closed. The dust! ![]()
