One thing that I’m constantly shaking my head about these days is the attention people seem to crave with ridiculously expensive and elaborate baby showers, bridal showers, gender reveal and especially weddings! I remember when many receptions were held at rented halls. I’m flabbergasted by the amount people spend nowadays, including my own daughter.
I remember when I was growing up there were no gift registries for showers/weddings. The decorations were simple. I went to showers/weddings that were decorated with paper streamers. Bridesmaids would have their dresses sewn by family members. I also remember going to a wedding where someone had a record player and just played records all evening. No DJ's or bands.

I was born in the 50's. High school late 60's; college 70's.
I feel like this "era" was a wonderful time to grow up. Starting with b/w tv's and very few shows to choose from (Mickey Mouse Club and Kaptain Kangaroo) then
The "Hippie" era..Goldie Hawn dancing around in a bikini "Hullabaloo".
Stores were all b/m then malls entered into consumerism.
We watched Walter Cronkite tell us about the world.
Ethics, values and morals seemed to be generally agreed upon so those values are the ones instill hold onto.
All in all, I cannot think of a time I would have rather grown up in.

Then. I would rather grow up in the '40s and '50s.

I remember a different "60's."
The Vietnam War was going on and the guys had to worry about what "number" they had. There were angry protests about the war and young men fleeing to Canada. A neighbor of mine was gunned down by the National Guard at Kent State.
The Weather Underground came about along with the SDS and Black Panther Party. Things could turn violent, i.e. rioting and bombings. Let's not forget the Watts Riot.
JFK, MLK, and RFK were gunned down by snipers.
Women and people of color were fighting for their rights.
Drugs were widespread at that time and many young people indulged.
Yeah, no, I don't remember the 60's as a fun time in America.

As a white, cisgender, straight, middle class person, I could live in virtually any era. Those who aren't any of those things probably don't crave a time when it was legal and encouraged to harass, beat and imprison them. Those weren't the good old, simple, respectful days for lots of people.
I wouldn't give up the technology of today, though, especially in this older age of my life where I'm no longer plaing kick ball, climbing trees and having outdoor keggers.

Definitely "then", not now. I wouldn't want to be born now.
