That's how I feel after seeing the pics in the link posted, too. Then there is this:
September: The subcommittee of the Raleigh Historic Development Commission votes 3-1 to approve Louis Cherry and Marsha Gordon's new build.
The commission, which is appointed by the Raleigh City Council is supposed to judge whether new homes meet the historical guidelines architecturally.
Construction started in October
February: Neighbor Gail Wiesner appeals to the Board of Adjustment and it votes 3-2 to revoke the approval for the house.
Their justification is that the commission failed in their duty to apply the proper guidelines.
The secretive board usually handles permits for day-care centers and minor city code violations.
In other words, the appropriate commission voted that the house was fine, but some secretive board that usually handles permits and such votes to overturn it? Sorry, something's not adding up. I think the woman in the pistachio house has too much time on her hands. I agree with whoever said that elements of her house are very similar to the new one being built, including the windows.

There is no mistaking that they knew what they were doing. I hope that they are and have good neighbors. That is what matters the most.
Don't forget that 100 + years ago the roads/streets were very narrow....as roads widened and sidewalks get added property frontage gets expropriated.

This home is actually only a couple of miles from where I live. I haven't read everything about it but from my understanding there was an appeal pending and they continued anyway. The neighborhood is quite up in arms about and they have been since they realized it wasn't going to fit in with the rest of the historical homes.
I have friends who live in the neighborhood and they stick very closely to historical standards when refurbishing. I have seen this house on several occasions and it looks totally out of place and I can't figure out why they would want to live there in the first place.

Interesting perspective, Irish.

They were given the okay to build their house from the board responsible for reviewing and approving such things. They followed the procedure and started construction. That should have been the end of the story. I don't care if the neighbors are "up in arms" or not. Their problem isn't with the home builders, it's with the board or commission that approved the plans. No, once a town approves something, they can't unapprove it. Especially after construction has begun. Whatever. I'm sure it will be decided by the courts. But that's NOT the type of town I would want to live in. Evil, unethical people.

Well I would be P/O'd if I spent all that money and then was told no when it was almost done. I don't think it is a ugly house at all, it just looks weird in that neighborhood. If I had that house I wouldn't want it in that place. There are plenty of lovely neighborhoods in Raleigh that have all different kinds of looks.
As for not wanting to live in a town that is evil and unethical, this stuff happens all the time in towns all across the US. Hardly anything new or only specific to Raleigh.
I am fairly certain they will side with the new homeowners.
