Jobs grew more lately than at any other time in recent years.

I live on the West Coast and the malls are thriving. JCP in one mall did close last year but the space was quickly filled with smaller stores.  The mall still has Nordstrom and Macy's as anchor stores. The economy is doing well here also.  Housing prices way up again.

I realize closing a department store or mall is economically unfortunate there are even bigger problems. In Flint , Mi the government decided to save money by switching the city's water supply causing lethal levels of lead in the water with catastrophic results to those affected. As a result it will probably cost over a billion dollars to clean up the problem but not consequences. This is in a state considering cutting the education budget and already raised taxes to begin fixing the roads. Not a good outlook for a state.

I am in NoCal, the malls are packed here as well.  Not all malls, but the bigger ones seem to draw all the big traffic.  We live near the outlets.  They have been here for 25 years and I have been there just a few times.  It is so crowded, you can't get a space to park.  It seems people shop for amusement and entertainment.  Sometimes on weekends I am told by locals the Coach outlet store has lines out the door, people have arm loads of handbags.  I hate to shop.  When I need or want something I am online.  The Valley Fair Mall and Santana Row across the street from there is always packed.  People circle the parking lots and multi level garages searching for a slot.  I don't get it.  Yes, many go and window shop, but they all seem to eat and buy something!!

Our homes crashed in 2008 like everyone in this country( but Sunnyvale). LOL.  They are back up almost to the inflated prices they were in 2008.  Our home has gone up over 500,000 dollars since we bought it. I couldn't afford, or want to pay the payments to buy my own back.  My first home in 1968 cost 15,000....and they threw in a  house full of furniture to seal the deal.  We were fortunate to own a home at such a young age.

Macy's has been closing stores for a couple of years that don't reach their hoped-for expectations.

Very sad.

Macy's needs an over haul in their sales and promotion dept.  Their coupons are misleading and are so complicated.  It is like Kohl's...you have to take a class in the art of coupon bartering!  What they offer is great, and their prices are low.  Sales at Christmas were unbelievable.  But I only shop online with them.  I live in the Santa Clara Valley, and their stores here are disorganized, and the coupon thing is too much for me.  I also hate shopping stores that push their CC for a discount.  I know the sales clerks get 4 to 6 dollars cash for every account they sign up.  But why should I wait in line while they take someone;s credit application?  They used to do that in the dept upstairs, but they do it at the check stands now.  They way I see the Macy's run here, I see how they loose money. I would hate to loose Macy's, that would be a great loss for most shoppers! JMHO

The company my DH worked for manufactured wire. They opened a plant in China because they had a demand there and it was cheaper to make the wire there than make it here and ship it. However, they soon closed that China plant because the inferior product that the Chinese were making was costing them more than they were saving. I have heard of other companies who are also coming back because the inferior product being produced by the labor force over there.
