Since last month, seven people in the state have become critically ill from drinking bootleg hand sanitizer.  Three of these people died, one was left blind, three are in critical condition.  We have a big problem with alcoholism.

DONT DRINK THE HAND SANITIZER!!!

@Kachina624   I just read about this in our online paper...it had methanol in it...at least that's what our paper said...how sad....DW

Has it been reported why people are drinking it? I've seen videos of hand sanitizer being produced in bottles that are made to resemble alcohol bottles. I don't know if it's bootleg or not. Here's an example:

   

Granted the bottles are clearly marked but I wouldn't be surprised if some people aren't bothering to read the labels.

I don't know if that has anything to do with it but...maybe?

@SusieQ_2   I think there's no doubt they know what they're drinking.  If the can't get liquor, they'll drink mouth wash.

Wow, I was hoping to give them the benefit of the doubt but if they know what they're drinking, that's just sad or maybe a little nuts.

Vodka is my drink of choice but if it someday goes extinct I just can't imagine myself mixing up a hand sanitizer and soda. Thinking about it makes me want to gag.

Joan Kennedy, ex-wife of Ted (Chappaquiddick )   Martha's Vineyard......drank rubbing alcohol after she was deprived of real stuff.  Off to hospital to have stomach pumped.

Sounds like some more treatment programs are needed for alcoholism......and we all know how likely (unlikely) that is to happen these days...Very sad.

I posted about this a few days ago; there was a warning put out about even using hand sanitizer containing methanol....it is toxic when absorbed into the skin or ingested. The company selling it is out of Mexico. Sounded like you don't even have to drink it for it to cause death. When I was teaching, they had to take down the Purell dispensers in the cafeteria because the kids were wiping it on their tongues for the alcohol. They didn't get high, just sick.
