We used to have Elf on a Shelf at work. My boss would hide the Elf, take a close-up picture of it, and email the pic and a hint to everyone. The first one to find the Elf received a gift, usually a gift card from a restaurant, Starbucks, amazon, etc. This went on for several days before the holidays until most of us, or maybe all of us, had won a gift. It was light-hearted fun.

My kids were born in early 1980s. Then we spent 3 year in W. Germany so I never had to deal with the elf. Good thing because I think it is creepy.

Personally, if I were a child, I'd rather have a cute little elf in my home, knowing where he is, than a big, unseen bearded peeper spying on me so as to know when I'm awake, when I'm sleeping, and everything in between. I mean, where is this guy anyway? Peering through the  window? Hiding behind the bushes? Now that's creepy! Smiley Wink Smiley Very Happy

@SusieQ_2   Yes.  I know.  You have already indicated your dislike of Santa.

I liked Santa.   He brings the good stuff.  The elf is just a snitch.

You do you, though.  Certainly you heard of Santa as a child?

@Cakers3

Actually, I love Santa. I'm just having fun as I thought everyone was since this is hardly a serious subject. I guess I didn't realize there was a limit as to our replies (are there rules?) since you seem to have had quite a few more than me. As well, this thread is posted by you on a yearly basis so it's not as if you haven't made your opinion known many times over.

Yes, of course I've heard of Santa. He's the top dog who employs the elves aka snitches to do his bidding so what does that make him? Between him and the little elf I know which one I would find creepier as a child. He sees you when you're sleeping? C'mon now. At least the elf's presence is known.

I always wonder what you do you really means. Unless we're talking about something very different and vastly more enjoyable who else would I do? Smiley Very Happy

When I was a kid, I used to receive an Elf with a Whitman sampler mini candy box tucked into his arms.  They were sold that way and available at our local drug store.

I have no idea when this Elf on the Shelf nonsense came into existence.  I find it creepy and scary. Kids should not be subject to things that go bump in the night.

Oh, so elf on the shelf started in 2005.  That explains why it means nothing to me.

Didn't grow up with this in the 1950s. When my kids were little this thing was around but not at our house. I viewed it then and still do, as one more obligation I don't need to put on myself.

My son and his gf hide the elf for her children to find.  He's created some really funny situations for the kids to laugh at.  I'm kinda glad this wasn't the thing when my sons were young.  I'm not as creative as he is and I'd run out of ideas quickly.

If you are lucky enough to have a 6 year old great grandson that lives with you, you will find yourself with a huge smile on your face watching him climb out of bed and run downstairs each morning to see where his elf has landed during the night.  His delight is priceless.  Creepy?  Not to him, nor to this old lady.

They  land?   I guess I knew even less than I thought!  Smiley Very Happy

I'm glad some folks and kidlets like this and certainly do not begrudge anybody that.

I'm just one of those people for whom dolls and clowns creep me out and this seems to fall in that category.  Smiley Happy

LOL.  Well I guess they have to "land" how else would they get here.  Dolls do not creep me out but those clowns sure do. Smiley Very Happy
