Everyone is having great fun and doing it with lighthearted humor.
No creepiness. No scolding or threatening of the kids.
It is what you want to make it. Exhausting for the parents involved though.
@Johnnyeager DD does it the same way and we have had alot of fun over the years. It is exhausting for the parents and I made it more so (payback is great lol) and bought her the girl elf and clothes for both. So she has to not only hide both but change their clothes. They both have formal attire for Christmas Eve.

Did the mean lil' elf break the gold nutcracker's arm? He looks guilty.....
@KingstonsMom And what is he hiding behind his hands.

It's not my thing, either, but those cartoons are pretty funny! ![]()
I don't even know a lot about it because I've only seen it on tv shows, never IRL. (not interested, either)

I was given a Christmas pickle that will be placed on my tree. Personally, I liked the peppermint pig that comes with a little hammer . You crack the pig and you have tasty peppermint to eat on Christmas Eve dinner . It is folklore for good luck or give a marzipan pig as good luck .

Well, they are nutcrackers. I was also curious as to what happened to the nutcracker's right arm.
I did not grow up with Elf on the Shelf and don't know when that became a thing. But I do have two vintage elves that came from boxes of laundry detergent.

I thinks it's really cute all the ideas people have come up with. Some have gone a little on the dark side but really all in good fun.

@Nancy Drew Dark side is good. LOL
A snitch on the shelf has always been why I do not care for that elf.

People claim the elf is creepy but I'd bet the great majority of them passed down the tradition taught to them about the large bearded man who does a break and enter every year via the chimney (if one exists) and even takes their kids to sit on this stranger's lap at the mall. Because that's not creepy at all. ![]()
I imagine that the majority also taught their kids the lyrics to this popular chidren's Christmas jingle ~
